I've run Michellins on cars; hard ride but excellent tire. I've run Coopers on cars; better ride, would not wear out. 80,000 miles before they started rotting. But I've never run either one on a truck!

I have been running Cooper LT's since 96 and have not had any failures.
Average around 60,000 miles on a 1/2 ton and 45,000 miles on 3/4 ton trucks.
Lots of towing too.
These tires are very good in mud considering they are an all terrain tire.

FWIW.

Sorry I didn't have both on the same vehicle, but all I can say is I will never own another set of Coopers. They are the cheapest piece of crap tire I've ever owned. In their defense, I have a few friends running Coopers on their Chevy gassers and they are happy with them.

The Michelin's I have now are a great tire.

When I see that golf legend advertising Cooper I always thought is was funny because a person would think he could afford a better tire than that. My gooseneck came with 10 ply cooper and so far no problems. Will replace with Michelin's without a doubt.

I had a set of copper ST tires on mine ford 3/4 ton and i loved them, they where a mean tire great in snow and mud, i have kellys on the dodge right now and will replace with Cooper ST as soon as i can afford to

Hoss,
The only tire (by a major tire mgf. ) worse than a Cooper, is a Kelly. I hated those worse than the Coopers I've had.

All in all, I think the best tire is whatever you have the best luck with. Obviously I didn't have too good of luck with the Coopers or the Kellys.

I've run Coopers on Toyota 4-runners and a '98 Ram. Both have been to Colorado on many high country hunting trips and lots and lots of rocks and never had any failures. Excellent traction and good milage for the size tire and weight of vehicle. I've used the Discover Radial LT and the SST (noisy). When the Michellins that came on this truck wear out, I will be replacing with Coopers.

I see some post that are very negitive about Cooper, but I have them and sware their the best tires I have ever had! Now I am using the Highway Rib design called the SRM-II's on my 2wd. When their worn out, they will be replaced with the exact same tire. Now they have about 40K on them and look like more then 1/2 the tread is still there.

As for Michelns, I run the X-1's on my Jetta. Bought them because they have a 80K mile tread wear warrantee. I have had no problems with them either.

I think the trick is I rotate all my tires about every 10K miles

My 01 has Michellin's and every car and truck i have had beofre this either came with Michellins or i put them on. They are in my opinion (and many others) a great tire. Cooper's are decent, but why put below average tires on a 30k truck. In alot of cases, you get what you pay for.

My factory Michelins were 75% worn at 18k. They SUCKED in snow this year, although last year they were decent. I replaced with a set of Delta Chapparels, they are made by COoper and have the "discoverer" tread. Made a helluva deal on them ($78 each mounted and balanced for a load range D [3000lbs]) and decided to go with it. So far, I like them. I have had them in about a foot of snow off road, and no problems. Also, had the truck climb right up a 45-55 degree incline with no problem.

Road noise is more noticable than the highway tread on the Michelins, but not annoying. Also, the "bunny hop" seems to be gone with these tires, where the michelins allowed the truck to jump like a rabbit.

Thanks guys; I've had a couple of bad Michellins; everyone can make a bad tire. My Coopers on my Buick went bad after about 60,000 miles of abuse and STILL had plenty of tread left! I can get the SRMII's mounted and balanced for $90 each, so I'm going with Cooper. Thanks for steering me clear of Firestones; they came highly recommended down here!

Good thread topic. I have the Mich's and want a taller but narrow tire for the snow. I want to see what others say about the coopers.

My Mich's are looking great at almost 40K of dirt roads and over the speed limit highway driving... #ad

I just talked with my father tonight.

The second set of Coopers on his van are having the sidewalls crack after 1 year and 20,000 miles (first set did the same thing.

No, he doesn't use any tire dressing, and I don't that's the reason or an excuse.

I have cooper AT on my truck now, will put another set on, I would not buy Mich with your money. Have 80,000 on the coops now, they are close to needing replace, probably after the next trip to Anchorage, Alaska.

Truck came with Michlens which were excellent. Replaced them with Cooper H/T's and made big mistake. Will be lucky to get 20k out of these. Will go back to Michlens.

jsimpson,
The Coopers my father is having problems with are on his van. I don't know the exact model of the tire.

Here is another negative bit of info on the Coopers. Stopped by a friends last night who has Cooper Discover AT's on his 1500 Chevy gasser 4x4, with a V6. With only 15,000 miles on them they are wearing terrible all the way around, even in the rear (I know he isn't burning them off with the V6). It is unlikely they will make it more than another 15,000.

Like most other manufacturers (other than Michellin), Cooper has different levels of price and performance in its lineup. I have heard no bad comments on the top-of-the line tire I'm buying. I got better than 60,000 miles out of Coopers on my Buick, and STILL had plenty of tread left. I never did better than 30,000 with Michellins. I think that this thread is proof that making an economy tire ruins the reputation of the whole line of tires. Michellin shows wisdom in avoiding that pitfall!
