Best Toy hauler for winter living?

Truck slide in camper advice

Well it is a bit of a hunk of junk but what can you do for $2500.

It has a perforated deck (nice), 3 7K torsion axles (nice) and needs 6 new tires. :{ Any suggestions on trailer tires? A set of LED lights all around, 1 new ramp and a few odds and ends I will be in business.

Well if nothing else, once you get through with setting up the way you want it, you should be able pull what ever you want. The money you saved over a new one will go a long way torwards usefull upgrades of the trailer. All LED, tool box, better tie-down system, and such. ;)

ramps & tires

I got my last set of ramps from C. F. Bender Company

You can look them up at www.cfbender.com

they have alot of car trailer parts.

My last 16 tires 8 at a time I have gotten from Pep Boys I think the size is 235/85-16 10 ply and I have been getting around 60k out of them about $128. 00 each mounted AND ballance

My trailer is 10k empty then you add 4 cars it's alot of weight then you add alot of turns into car dealers and you can see it is hard on the tires and you with 3 axles when the trailer is loaded and you make a hard turn look back at the tires it looks like they are being riped off the rims :{

Good Luck

Cliff

OK someone please tell me this isn't a good idea so i can get it out of my head. I will have a 2006 megacab 2500 soon(on order). Im thinking of just a little side job of maybe just a 2 car hauler, gooseneck, maybe a few campers here and there, etc

Cliff,

Your trailer now is probably setup for all chains but I think you said you may have had a wedge in the past... what is the general consensus on tie down method. I have heard that many places will not let you use tire straps. I am honestly not too familiar with chain down points and points. The trailer I got has lots of transport chains and ratchets but also has a perforated deck so I could use the Take 3 style wheel straps too.

Thanks for the info on the ramps, I will check them out.

Thanks for the insight. What kind of truck are you using?

Great pictures! Is that your truck? Good lord that hurts to look at. I noticed it is a gooseneck trailer. What caused it, do you know?

My plans are to use a 1 ton dually and losing the bed. I am thinking of using a "low profile" trailer with a 5th wheel hitch--Not a gooseneck and not a regular rise wedge trailer that has to clear the bed rails. Hopefully this will prove a lot safer.

If interested I have a take 3 low profile 5th wheel trailer for sale. It is 53' and is set up to haul cars, trailers, and boats. The traileris in excellent condition with less than 10,000 miles on it. It has dual tandems and a 24,000lb gvw. Also check out centraldispatch.com

they broker nothing but the transpotation of cars. I use to haul this trailer with a F-450.

straps & chains

Patrick

I use chains most of the time and after you do it a few times you learn were to look on each car to hook the chain.

I do use wheel straps on some of the cars on the bottom row. Some of the new wheel straps will hold most any car or truck on your trailer but I would keep the chains so when you hall some big cars or trucks and they need to be close together the chains will hold them better and they will not rub together.

Every one I know with wedge trailers use the chains most of the time.

At this time your chains are free all you need is a good tie down bar and you can go make some money. :D

Then you can buy some straps to try out. My straps are only used part time and don't last much more then a year I have some chains that are 2 1/2 years old but they were out also.

Good Luck

Cliff

on EDIT go to Bordentown auction and watch some of the drivers load with chains and you will see how well the cars are held in place with the chains

Let's hear from you guys hauling cars out there:

What are you paying for insurance and which provider?

THNX.

$585 per month through Wilshire Insurance company. $1,000,000 commercial liability and $100,000 cargo.

Ok, a little embarassing but this is living in New Jersey.

$6084 for 750k Combined single limit Progressive

$2700 for 100k cargo from LLoyds

$8784. Haven't signed up yet though.

I might have to up that to 1 Million and 150k anyway.

The same amounts out in Arizona were about 33% less if I recall correctly.

Cliff, I don't know if this is an interest to you but Discount Tire Direct has free shipping on tires at the moment, so I ordered up 7 235/85R16-E's for $92 each to my door. Will save a little, but maybe not worth the hassle having to bring them to a shop to have them mounted/balanced!

In terms of chaining up... Can you give any advice? I would guess that chaining to the frame (compressing the suspension) is a no no? If I came to Manheim 1 day could you show me some stuff? :D

I spoke with United Road and apparently they have all the work I could want out of the port of Newark doing all local runs. This would let me do some runs every morning before my day job  to get a feel for it. I have heard companies like these delivering new vehicles will require chains anyway.

Come to Manheim

Patrick

You can come to Manheim any Friday you want :D

Most every car has points on the frame to put chains into you just need to know were to look, then some chains need to pull front and some need to pull back. And if you put the chain in to the wrong hole on the new frames they will rip open like a tin can :--)

I go to Port Newark one or two times a week delivering used cars to ship over seas. I don't haul new cars out of the port because they don't pay enuf.

Think about it when you see new cars being delivered they are on old beat up yellow or blue trucks. And alot of the used cars are delivered on new shine trucks. The port sets the price for new cars and the owner operators set the price for used cars.

BUT new car haulers allways have work and used car haulers have some slow times with not much work.

also try CentralDispatch.com. Thats where I got most of my loads. I pulled a 53' Take 3 with an 02 Duramax with Juice. Had no problems with truck or trailer. Got rid of the truck w/100k, still had factory brake pads on it. Hotels also add up quick. I could usually sleep in the truck one night but DOT won't let you log it as sleeper time. Check with some of the brokers you are planning to use. Most of the ones I dealt with required more than the minimum cargo coverage. Good luck.

Brian, I am just getting into the biz and have been thinking about using CentralDispatch.com. If I'm not being to nosy, what's you avg. pay per mile per car and your avg. trip distance using them? Also are you still pulling?

Thanks, Dan.
