Anyone here use a PacBrake (or other E-Brake) with a HX40 or PDR HX40 turbo? My 1997 originally had a 3" outlet out of the factory HX35 turbo and if I were to get a PacBrake for my 1997 it would not fit the new 4" outlet from my PDR HX40 turbo. Would I (if I were to perchance purchase said E-Brake), have to purchase an E-Brake for the 2003+ modles since they have 4" back exhaust pipes from the factory turbo?

I was reading where Mark Chapple form TST Products does not recommend the remote mount EB because of all the water/mud/snow and damaging things that can destroy the EB. Also he stated it is not as powerful as the Direct mount.

But, it seems that this would be my only option (plus I would have to get the 60lb springs for my 12 valve).

I can not seem to find a picture of the Remote Mount EB, just the Direct Mount EB are pictured at all the websites. I would like to see the installation instructions. It looks like rocket-science to me, especially the remote mount. Probably better left to the professionals.

Look at Jerry Nielsen's articles in the within the last couple of issues (Life's a Beach).

You cut the exh. downpipe after it starts running parallel under the cab. You are in salt country, so a concern.

How fussy are you about keeping the truck clean and blasting its underside off real good? I used to live in Bedford and Milford so its a chore to keep the salt from attacking!

You might have a sheetmetal shop fab up a ss slash guard to keep the road spray off of it. Go and see the folks at Blue Chip in Hudson/Nashua, I bet they have an idea or two.

Good luck

How Fussy am I about keeping the truck clean? Not very ... it has dents, rust, and it now looks like it has Messels with all the dings I have put paint on. No way to clean off the truck in the winter since the hoses go into the shed in October and don't come out till May due to freezing concerns.

I have been to BlueChip many times ... I guess I probably should call Chip and ask his advice ... see if its worth it on an old truck. But, I will be keeping the truck for at least another 3 years till a 5500 is available.

I run a 4" remote mount Pac on my 03 behind an bigger turbo with 4" downpipe. No complaints about the function of the brake. Mine is air activated and I use a $35 solenoid to run it off the air tank I already have for my airbags. Something to consider, small electric compressors are not a lot of money.

I already have the pac brake - turbo mounted. I also have the 16 cm housing from PDR. Next I'm planning on putting an HX-40 style compressor side on the front to build my own hybrid 40/35. I don't feel up to replacing my pac yet, but if this new turbo setup doesn't perform, that will be the next task. With the remote setup you have to weld the exhaust tight forward of the brake right?

I'm assuming the HX-40 housing has a 4" outlet ... how did you fit the PacBrake in there? When I look under my hood at the PDR HX40, I see no room left to install a EB to the back of the turbo.

I think I will have the 60lb. springs done soon, then go with a EB this fall.

Just too bad there isn't a 3 stage Engine Brake available for the 6BT.

FATCAT, I'm running a BD 4" remote mount (got it from Muddymess :) ) with my PDR40 and haven't had any problems in 40K miles and I live in salt country. I did clean the spool valve 2 winters ago, but periodic spool valve maintenance is sometimes required and it is a very easy job. TPCDrafting was talking about using an HX40 compressor (front side), not the turbine (back side), which would allow him to keep the turbo-mounted brake. As per BD, you can mount the remote brake anywhere in the system just as long as there is no flexible exhaust hose in front of it (between the brake and the turbo). You can have clamps on the exhaust in front of it, I have one clamp in front of the brake so that I can remove that section of pipe if need be, the rest is welded.

Thats nice KEarnest. Does Muddymess have a website to view/order the remote brake?

If you have to replace your exhause in the future, how can you save the EB on the welded side (I don't know how to weld so forgive me if its a stupid question)?

The inline brakes usually come with a pair of flanges that clamp on with v-band clamps to the brake body. The exhaust pipe is then welded to the flanges on each side of the brake. Ideally it should be as close to the turbo as possible, mine is right at the end of the downpipe. The one in the picture above is much farther back (behind the transfer case) this will still give effective braking but there will be more delay in the activation.

If future exhaust changes are to come simply cut the flanges from the pipe and weld them into your new system, no problem.

FATCAT, I bought a very slightly used one from TDR member Muddymess. You can buy new ones from several places including PDR and Rip Rook. The remote brake is actually clamped on, not welded, so you can keep it it you ever change your exhaust. But, you could weld it on if you wanted to. I just added an extra clamped piece in front of the brake so I could remove the downpipe if need be. My brake is actually further back than most people put them. I put mine a little further back to clear the FastCooler that's on my T-Case. Here's a couple more pics of an E-Brake mounted at the bottom of the downpipe and also the pieces/parts of the BD kit.
