Multimeter Questions

I have BellSouth DSL line... holy bandwidth, Batman!! I run 3 machines with multiple tasks each on the one line, and it's super-fast. Absolutely worth the $50 per month. One word of caution: if you are working from home and need internet access, dont chuck your regular ISP. I have found the DSL servers to be less than bug-free. I make my living on-line and cannot afford to be unable to connect. when BellSouth's servers take a nap, I use my regular dial-up ISP. Have fun... . the speed RULES!!!

ALLTELL= #ad
Worst phone company ever! About 20 years behind on upkeep.
Same question, about DSl, we are thinking about it, but I think this local company can't handle it. We still have trouble getting a dial tone!! I would love the speed!

I had to buy the modem for $150 from BellSouth, no contract to sign. Free activation and 5 e-mail boxes. Dont go with RoadRunner... its crapola. Ask about Cable modem! They are even faster than DSL!

I can't speak for ALL-TEL but DSL is awesome in comparison to dial-up. It is like going from black and white to color TV. I have had Qwest DSL for over a year now and have not been down once. It is definately worth it if you can afford it.

While on the subject of ISPs. I'm so far out in the sticks that dialup is all I can hope for. Seems to me that a satellite dish would be the way to go. Have I missed a banner ad somewhere,or is no one offering a non-telephone company wireless route to the net?I understand that you would need to send as well as receive and would probably need an amp for the out signal. Where's technology when you need it?

There are a few companies starting up out there that are offering wireless internet... via a radio link. It's fast, both bandwidth and install.

If nobody in your area is moving in, email these folks www.pocketinet.com and ask them if they are moving in to your area anytime soon. I'm about to get hooked up... not to my home, but a dedicated link to my web server. The price is a wee bit higher than DSL, but worth it, if you ask me.

Chelan's not that big of a place, it would seem unlikely that DSL or cable internet's coming too soon.

You can get a satellite link in both directions, but it's VERY expensive. . not personal use kinda money, on the order of 1000 a month.

Just got a thing from Earthlink / Sprint
DSL, free modum & equip, free install and 20 hours of free long distance dial up roam for $39. 95 a month. Requires 6 month contract.

Can I put 2 computers on the one dsl line and use them both at the same time??? I have 2 phone lines now, one for each computer.

yes, you can. I would suggest you obtain a small hub/router combo to put between the DSL modem and your computers.

It's a very simplistic router, and costs no more than about 200 bucks. There's other ways of doing it. Sometimes your provider will have a more elegant solution. Call and ask. If they insist on charging you more for having 2 machines hooked up, then don't pursue them any farther #ad

In that case, you'd need to install the stuff yourself.

If you need help, you can call your local friendly comptuer store, or email me #ad

Thanks for the reply. I'll give them a call and just be dumb; thats easy cuz i iz.

I had SWBell DSL before I moved. To say that the service was sub-standard would be a compliment to SWBell.

Anyhow, I would find out if the group you are interested in is using any of the PPPOE authentication software. If they are I would STRONGLY recommend a router like the Linksys BEFSR series. They make a one port and a four port so that you can share your connection with multiple PC's. Even if you don't intend to share your connection I would get the one port just to not have the PPPOE software on your PC. The router takes care of that for you and it offers limited firewall functionality
too.

Good luck,
Mike

JNutter, you will no longer need the other phone lines! So scratch those costs... you can run SEVERAL computers at the same time AND talk on the telephone (same line) all at the same time!! Because of reliability, I kept another phoneline and my 'regular' ISP. The others are correct, you will need a router box to and ethernet card to connect multiple machines (i have 3).
