I'm a PacBrake distributor... . We've sold many exhaust brakes to TDR Members... I don't recall how many of them had the G56, to my knowledge there are no problems with this... . All manual transmissions are designed to transmit power in either direction... . Its the low fluid pressure in the torque converter in the automatic's thats an issue... . the low fluid pressure means slippage, which is heat... and poor performance... .

Hope this helps. .

Jelag,

I've been comparing the Pac vs Jake brake's. I'm leaning towards the Pac cause it has an air compressor. I see there is a 1/2 gallon tank. Could I use a larger tank instead of this tank so I could fill tires etc?

Also If I had an air compressor on the truck already driven by the engine could I use this instead of your 12 volt compressor?

Thanks

The compressor isn't designed to be a 100% duty cycle unit... . so its not advised to run a larger tank..... If you have an air compressor and tank now..... yes that would drive the PacBrake with no problems... . as long as its in the 100 psi range... I'm guessing it would take an engine driven compressor like you suggest to do tire filling... . I personally haven't seen a 12 V powered compress designed for a 100% duty cycle.....

Got an '05 with a G56 and a Jake . . . it works great! Probably the best investment I have made in my new rig. Wouldn't tow without it.

Had 03 with Pac Brake pulling heavy loads. Just bought 06 and installed the Jake Brake pulling same loads and do not feel it has the retarding power of the Pac Brake on the 03. I was also told by a Pac Brake distributor that they did not have a brake out yet for the 06 G56. Is that true?

As far as stopping power, i thought the same (had pacbrake on 01). I finally figured out the reason is the G56 gearing. Since it is geared "lower" (I say 4:10s are lower gears than 3:73's) the driveline has more leverage on the engine than with an old 5 or speed (NVG trannys). Basically, the same principle that makes it easier to move a load with 4:10's (versus say 3:73 gears) makes it easier for the axles to resist the stopping power of the exhaust brake.

If you look at the specs for the Jacobs brake, they have a graph (I think I saw one anyway) that showed braking HP vs RPM. The higher the RPM, the greater the braking. Thus, a truck with 4. 10's or the G56 would have better braking action from an exhaust brake in top gear.

OK - so what would be best. Go to the dealer and have them install the DC one (my truck has 17K miles on it, still under warranty) or find a supplier to do it local.

I installed my own, the most difficult part was getting the 2 rubber stoppers out of the computer. Was pretty much a bolt-on thing. 1/2 day tops.

the exhaust brake on a G56/NV5600 works the same. I use the Jacob exhaust brake because Dodge will warranty the Jacobs brake only... ... ... . JIM

Exhaust brake

OK, I have an 04. 5 with the Auto transmission. Now I want to put a brake on, what do I need in addition to the brake. Do I need a Lock up device, or is the Tow-Haul all I need?

I hear that the TC pressure is low, is there something that Boosts the pressure.

I'm kind of at a loss here, tell me what to do!!

I have the Jacobs on BOTH of my trucks, and will never run/tow without one again.

That being said, the newer Jacobs (for the 4. 5 and newer), uses the 4" elbow design. And many other improvements to make them run well even mounted on the turbo.

I had the dealer put mine on the 05 before I left the lot. It's always nice to have leverage ;)

As for the automatic issue, they will lock up the torque converter so the fluid pressure is no longer an issue.

The Jacobs works with auto's on the new 06 models (48RE trans only).
