I'm not looking for a Cape Buff load. Just something to shoot at some steel plates at the range.

Factory velocity or maybe a little hotter.

I'm loading for a Marlin 1895 guide gun.

I already have 405 gr Remington bullets, which I'm told are very accurate for factory bulk stuff.

I have Winchester brass. I've heard the Rem brass aint quite as good.

I have a LOT of different powders.

I want something clean and accurate.

Thanks.

Eric

How do you like that gun? I've got a Marlin guide gun in 44 mag. I sold my Browning 1886 in 45-70, but never did reload that caliber. Sorry for the lack of information.

I love it!! All I shot through it has been the Remington factory 405's. I think Rem is trying to duplicate the full black powder experience. VERY DIRTY!!!

It's a little older gun,has the porting. Theyre not porting them anymore from what I'm told.

Guys on the firingline dont like the porting. :-laf It's pretty loud!!

Pretty accurate however it's as ergonomic as a pool cue.

Which is one of the reasons I dont want to get too carried away with the reloads.

I've heard of guys running the 405 to almost 2000 FPS, but shooting at steel plates... ... ya gotta ask WHY???

No sir, 1300- 1500 FPS will be fine for me.

I'm sure the plates wont be able to tell the difference.

Eric

PS The 44mag is an 1894. Different gun. :D

Depending on the barrel twist, you could work up some wicked 300 gr loads for that. I'm sure they'd work well on deer, hogs, or whatever you might need to shoot in Texas. :-laf

I have loaded for the 45/70 since I was in 7th grade Many different guns and many differnt powder/brass/bullet combos.

First gun I bought was a Marlin model 1895. I have had it reworked and modified (BOMBed?) I still shoot it religously.
