Your definition is correct.

I can only imagine that by also removing the cat the sound would be even worse.

Are you serious? Every 2nd gen truck I've heard with a straight pipe sounded like a semi!

Seriously,

My 2nd gen with a straight pipe sounded awesome. My 3rd gen 600 straight piped (cat in place) did not sound like my 2nd gen. Like I said, the tone was not as deep and it was harsh and raspy.

If you are going to straight pipe a 3rd gen you have to go with big pipe to get rid of the raspyness. I herd a 3rd gen with twins and a 5" down pipe and 6" on back with a 7" tip sounded sweet it sounded like a 12v.

About six feet of straight 4 inch pipe will do the trick. The tail pipe will not come out exactly the same, but it looks fine.

Correction, make that seven feet from the down pipe to the tail pipe on a crew cab short box.

mine is straight piped with 5"stacks, it sounds nothing like a second gen but it sounds good nonetheless! I have a Laramie with all the insulation so it seems to not drone as bad as compared to a non-laramie.

I am thinking of putting stacks on my truck. Did you do it your self or did you get it done. How expensive are they. I am worried about cab vibration. How bad is it

Straight piped mine and it lowered egt's about 100º. Also I had a Magnaflow turbo back system on my truck. Magnaflow used my truck to make their kit for long beds. In exchange the gave it to me for free plus a rental car for a week. I hated the way it souned. Took the muffler off. So much better. Yes it's loud but not that bad over all. Unless you're really on it. Have a buddy that straight piped his but left the cat. Sounds really good. Another buddy straight piped his 600. Nothing else done to the truck. And gained 2mpg.

sick ram

I did the exhaust and stacks myself. I got all the parts from a big rig shop locallly. I figure I spent about $600 for everything. It is pretty loud but it isnt obnoxious until i really get on it.
