Anyone installed a Frantz bypass under the hood of an '06?

Just got an '06 and wondered if anyone has figured out a good place to put a Frantz bypass under the hood?

I want to get mine on before I go on a road trip tomorrow. TIA.

I seen your post on bob is the oil guy, congrats on the new CTD. I mounted mine to the passenger side battery tray. If you need pics I can send them to you via email.

Frantz Location

I mounted on my '05 above the existing filter and attached it to the two bolts on the exhaust manifold that hold that aluminum shield in place. I used two 3 inch pieces of 1 inch angle iron from the hardware store as a mounting base. the Frantz hooked up nicely. Been on about 10k miles and no problems.

I mounted my Motorguard, which is very similar to a Frantz, under my air filter. I fabbed a mount which attaches to the right of the radiator support. The only bad thing about this spot is that I have to pull the air filter to change the TP.

Mounted 2 under hood

I mounted an angle bracket (2"x2"x12" long) off of 2 unused 3/8 inch bolt holes on the front of engine. This extends to the drivers side of engine compartment beyond the oil dipstick. I mounted dual Frantz oil filters on it. I am planning on taking some pics... I will post them after.

I have a link to my yahoo photo album w/ 3 pics of the Frantz oil cleaner. Nothing fancy, but functional. I currently have them hooked up in series, like putting the oil through 9" of TP. Good oil flow, if my analysis comes back good, I will probably keep it like this.

I like your idea of running two in a series. What is your interval of changing them. With two, there should be no question on the tp not catching any particles with one run through them. I am changing my single every 2k to 2. 5k miles will be doing my first oil analysis soon at 10k on the oil.

This is a recent install. I had purchased 2, and for the 1st 500 mi only had 1 installed. This was with oil I had changed 1000 mi previously. So I then changed that roll, and added the second Frantz. I now have 1000 mi on this set-up. I put about 500 mi a week on the truck just commuting and other stuff, more if we are towing on the weekend. So I haven't seen any results yet. I am planning on changing the filters around the same interval as you, But that may change as I see the filter condition, and get back results on my oil.

Ark,

When I 1st mounted a single unit, I had a mount that actually had the filter higher than this by a tad. Hood closed fine, but I found it had rubbed on the under hood pad pretty good, but did not hurt anything other than a slight impression on the pad. With this set-up, I don't see any sign of it touching(but it must be darn close)! I know that I like having them so accessible for leak checking,(none) and changing. Even if they did slightly touch the pad, I would not move them. There is no heat transfer to the hood (I checked with engine good and warm). I added this pic so you can see how they sit in the compartment.

I noticed you are returning to the oil filler cap. How messy is it when you change out your TP? I didn't figure that you are getting a drain out after engine shutdown?

By the way, thanks for the pics :)

I return mine though the oil cap as well and have not had a messy change yet. The seal is covered in oil that I wipe off but that is it. I do let it sit overnight though. I hope my oil analysis look as good as I like the frantz.

No problem for the pics, I had just taken some yesterday after washing the truck. It was pretty grimey after last weekends trip towing the trailer to Yosemite. I just changed the tp today, 2,000 mi on filters, 3,000 on oil, it was a little messy. I stuffed an old cloth around the base to catch the oil, as I was expecting it. It was pretty easy to do with the filters right up front. This is my 1st bypass filter, so I consider it a work in progress. I was also considering taking the oil return to the block, I did not want to punch the pan. Here is a link to an installation I had found here on TDR, with an oilguard. Pics 4&5 show where he took the return to his block.

That return port in the block would be the way to go. I'm assuming it returns straight into the oil pan?

I actually punched my oil pan on my Ferd and installed a STHB, but would prefer not to do that on my new truck. I'll crawl under my truck tomorrow and take a peek at the return port in the block. Man, this site's great...

I haven't checked mine yet, let me know what you find if you do crawl under your rig. That original poster said his had an aluminum plug that he pried out w/ a screwdriver.

Tom.

Just crawled under the truck. I couldn't find a plug on the block near the oil pan. Must be on the earlier models?

I'll eventually remount my Frantz under the hood and use a self tapping hollow bolt on the oil pan.

arkapig it's still there ... it's were the old turbo drain return was ...

look at your turbo oil return line, see where it enters the block right above the oil pan...

then go about 12 inches towards the radiator at the same level on the block, you'll see the same type of fitting cast into the block

2broke,

is there a special fitting that goes into that old turbo drain hole to attach the tubing to?

I just put a frantz on my truck with the return thru the oil cap, but it's rubbing on the hood insulation when the hood is closed, so I want to change it to another location.

tks for any info you can give me
