Starting a new career

I decided to try Linux. I wanted to start with DSL3. 1 and downloaded it. It downloads as a . ISO file. What am I supposed to do with that?

Thanks for the replies. My understanding is that Nero will create a bootable CD from the . ISO, and I have Nero on disk somewhere, but do you think I can find it? Are ther any newbie friendly freeware programs that will do the same?

Off the top if my head, I don't know what freeware programs under Windoze will burn a . iso to a CD. If you're on XP, try right-clicking on the . iso file, there may be something in the context menu to burn it (I run Win2k. )

Personally, I run SuSE, and have been for several years. May have to consider a new distro as Novell bought them up and is now doing deals with the Devil in Redmond.

Before you go to install linux. Back everything up on your computer that you do not want to lose. If the install goes bad you might need to reload windows.

Since I'm just starting, I'm only trying versions that allow you to boot from, and load the OS, from CD to see what it is like. If you like it, then you can do a proper install. But yes, if I decide I want it, I will first load it on one of my nearly empty-of-anything PCs, and I will back up what little is on it.

Download the trial version of Nero. XP doesn't have anything built into it to burn ISO's to CD. DSL stands for Damn Small Linux. I have played around with Ubuntu, Fedora Core, CentOS and DSL. Thank goodness VMWare server is free now!

Also make sure you are downloading the LiveCD version(s) of Linux. Otherwise, you'll be installing Linux whether you want to or not.

I finally found my Nero CD and installed. Created bootable CD from . ISO with ease. Problem solved. Thanks all for your help.
