Is anyone familiar with the Fontaine "Classic Traveler" bed for the Ford Super Duty? Does anyone know of any similar beds made for the 3rd Gen Dodge? I'm not looking for an ugly flat-bed, add-on looking attachment. I would like something that looks like it was made for the truck. With trucks as tall as they are these days, it's hard to have any kind of a lift and still maintain good clearance for a 5th wheel... . Any thoughts? Otherwise, I'm thinking of cutting, welding and shaping my own.

C'mon, sombody has to know something about a custom bed for the 3rd gen Ram... Ford can't be the only one that has one of these mods. Please if anyone knows of a company that makes one, let me know...

I built mine. Now I am rebuilding it. Labor of love. Think of something better later. I did an aluminum flatbed with four tool boxes underneath. (Redoing those... will look way cooler). What is real cool is I made hinged sides that lock to the headache rack and the bed by the tail gate. The sides have 12" rear corners. I can slide them off the hinges or just lower them to take a pallet from the side or get into my stuff stored under my BigFoot camper. A good fab shop will build you one. Keep your bed as low as possible... try to stay near the factory bed height. Make it you. George (who does not know how to post a pic... sorry).

Thank you for the replies. Please don't take offense, but I really don't want the flat/square look of these hauler beds. I'm looking to have the original body lines front to back, just a "chopped" bed-rail. I saw one on a chevy at a local used car dealer. The lot owner said the truck came from Vegas and the bed was made in Texas, but his leads didn't hold up. My other thought was to just cut the top of the rails off, then weld a plate across at the new level... any thoughts/advice on this idea??? Anything would be better than the dent that I have there now... .

Well, I bit the bullet. I cut the siderails down about 7 inches with an abrasive disc on my circular saw and some corner work with a saws-all. It may be a while before I have it finished, but I'll post some pictures when I get a chance. One thing I need to figure out is exactly what I'm gonna' do with the taillights. I either need to mount somewhere else, or modify the whole thing to make it shorter. Let me know of your thoughts... For when I'm ready, how do you post a picture in here???

I'd love to see any pictures that you have so far. I'd be happy to post them on my website and you can link to them. Email to -- email address removed --.

I guess it's safe to say that you were not able to find any off the shelf boxes.

I can't find a website for them. Their beds look like what you are looking for, they are just down the street from me. They look like cut down dually beds.

klenger- I'm on dial-up out here in the country, so it may take a few minutes... but, I'm sending you a pic now.

Hey, I figured out how to post a picture. Sorry for the grainyness, but what do you expect from a phone? Here is the look I am after. I have just done the cutting part. Next will come some metal fab work and some welding... finished off with a spray-on bedliner material (color matched of course), to match the bed interior and the rockers/fender flares.

After letting my door barely touch a plastic side mirror, and receiving a uncomprehendible dent, I was expecting slightly thicker than tin-foil when I started cutting the bed. It actually surprised me and looks thicker than I expected. I didn't mic it or anything... just noticed it looked thicker than I thought it would. Still not as thick as I'd like, but...

Rusty: That's what the original post was trying to find, but he was unable to locate anything like that for the 3rd gens.

Ken,

From the above, I thought he was wanting something that resembles a cut-down stock bed.
