I'm about to get a new clutch installed and was wondering if I should get the transmission painted while it is out. This would be purely cosmetic, but I just hate the looks of all that rust. Anyone else do this? How'd you treat the rust and what paint did you use?

I'm considering POR-15 or a metal etch and then engine enamel.

I thought about it but never actually did it. I think that I would paint it silver if I did probably just with a rattle can (cheap effective easy to touch up) guess I just got lazy about it

Not yet, but I have been thinking about it. I definitely would if it was out. I was thinking gloss black tremclad, but your plan sounds better.

Heat? could that be one of the reasons its not painted or is it cost of the paint? Just a thought. Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY

Mine was painted black before it was installed. No cleanup involved. So far it looks pretty nice. I think it was done with engine paint.

The remanufactured trannies from Midwest Transmissions are painted after the cases are cleaned. I was told this helps them easily identify the ones they have worked on.

I like the paint much better than the rust.

Right after getting my 97 and my 04 I solvent cleaned the transmission and driveshafts and painted them with Krylon. It lasts very well and as you said, the rust doesn't look good.

Heck even I didn't paint the trany !!!!!! Now even Joe will beat me at the next show.

That's it I am retired.

to paint or not to paint

That is indeed the question. I recently painted my complete undercarriage. It turned out very nice. Now when I wash the truck, its easier to do the underside. I did this for the up & coming Chicago winter. I painted the driveshaft & the hitch. When is the last time you saw the hitch without rust?

My paint of choice was Chassis Saver. I see the add in my big truck magazines all the time. The paint can be sprayed or brushed on.

Why do people install transmission pans & diff cover pans if not just for looks? Are yours painted to match your truck?

YUP - painted my transmission with black Rustoleum right after I bought the truck - sure is easy to wipe down and keep neat looking... And maybe I'm a "neat freak", but I like to keep the UNDERSIDE of my truck as well-kept as the TOPSIDE...

But now I gotta get to the driveshafts...
