Purchasing 5th Wheel

Anyone pulling for horizon or other rv companies? Courious about how the cummings is handling the constant loads across the country? Considering pulling for horizon with my 1 ton dually, auto, 4X4. Thanks

Randy

Lot of people haul commercially, but I believe Yogibear does exactly what you are talking about. He will probably answer this thread for you.

I haul commercially but not what you are talking about, and yes, the Cummins will hold up to it. My first Dodge Cummins went 419,000+ miles and this one has gone 85,000+ miles in 9 months.

Thanks bmoeller, yes I do, anything legal that is. I'm not the least brand loyal. . . when the Ram breaks I run the PowerStroke, and visa versa. Sorta in deep caca right now, blowed the Ram clean up and the F350 flywheel is a whispering to me. Maybe I'll buy a DMax and take up three bays at my DOCs place. Spending the weekend at my Angola DOCs garage, need to decide by monday if I want to rebuild mine or get a Cummins Reman. Also, had a guy ask about buying my F350. Prolly need to sell it to fix the Ram. Besides the Ram having the sleeper it's the better hauler in my opinion. This racket is tough on pickups, don't know as I'd recommend running a ton PU fulltime daily to anybody. Might wanna consider a larger truck. Think most my problems are due to buying used vehicles, and the previous owners may have not been a deligent about PM as I am. Might have been wiser to purchase new and have the warranty. Live & learn.

Cheers,

Thanks for the replies

Thanks for the replies. The one tons are strong trucks but for long distant running, I would prefere a freightliner fl60 with a 3126 cat. Will probably use my one ton to see if its profitable out there then switch over. Sucks to have a blown engine. Good luck on the rebuild if you go that way. Wouldn't consider dmax due to iron block and aluminum head. That a problems begging to happen. I'll stick with cummins. Had a fl70 before with the 3126 and that seems to be a good engine. Good luck

CDaves, Ram's just turned 230k. The head gasket failed, allowing water in cylinders, don't make very good steam engines. Head cracked at 5 of 6 holes, probably all 6, just too small to see without xray. When she went it blowed all the oil out of the engine which did the bearings in. So no longer an inframe, gotta do sleeves and the whole smear now. Anybody know where I can get a Cummins Reman for the $3,200 with the 100k warranty now? To answer your question I've only averaged alittle over 10k a month since Feb this year. I know HotShots that average 15k a month and have for 7 years. Everybody that does this with ton trucks breaks, don't care what brand. Don't know if a Medium Duty Class VII is enough truck either. Know a few with them and they have all been having problems also. In fact a good friend with a FL60 haulin a 53 foot MT enclosed trailer for a guy running the race circuit, he, his tractor & the MT box all blown airborn and off the road into the ditch last Wednesday. Witness told him he'd never seen a truck airborne before. Only thing saved him was the fifth wheel left the tractor with the trailer which allowed him to steer out of hitting several poles. Other than alittle sore from rough landing, they did reconstruct damage to one ear. Prior to this this driver has no damage to units and gets off if he hears high wind or any bad weather reports. I could see the big trucks were a havin problems, 80k boxes doglegging the rear and some grabbing air on wind side. Did a pretty good job of blowing my little MT 350 CC Dually all over the road. Glad I was MT, would have gotten off otherwise. I was running I-70E, heard I-80 was shut down due to more wind and ice. I'm thinking maybe knocking an axle off a class VIII w/sleeper may not be overkill, up to this point I used to think that was rediculous. Second thoughts now.

Man Steve, thats some bad luck. Sorry to hear about the situation. I would think you could put a Cummins repower in it and sell it for some good money if you want to. That sleeper cab is pretty slick and there has to be someone willing to pay for the setup. Maybe your right, a Pete 330 or a little FL70 of the sorts would work out well for you. Lord knows if I had the deniro to buy one I would!!

Randy,

I drive for Horizon and love it. Great company to work for, and I do not like working for others. I have been considering a baby Freightliner, but the empty mileage has changed my mind. It is hard for me to catch backhauls, so empty mileage is a major factor.

Steve J,

I would be interested in your blown truck, I will PM you.

How long have you been driving for horizon? Is your truck 4X4 or 2WD? You mentioned the empty miles. From looking at there web site, seems they have alot of pick up locations. Is this BS or is it just slow. As far as the baby freightliner, the FL 50 has the same engine as the one tons have (5. 9L cummins) with a six speed or some come with allison 5 speed auto. Already set my 2000 4X4 dually up for pullin. Just have to get off my ass and get the app in. You can email me at -- email address removed -- if you would like instead of posting here. Later

78repowerwagon,

Please, if you don't mind, post your reply to RPainter here, as I'm interested as well in the answers to his questions. TIA.

OTRPU,

Call me clueless, but what does the MT in "Glad I was MT, ... " mean? And to add to 78repowerwagon's questions, any opinions on auto vs man for commercial towing? And is it true that trucks can't be older than 5 yrs? TIA.
