I was thinking of purchasing an 06 3500 4x4 Dually Big Horn From DSM, but was curious what happens when I bring it back to CA. It has Ca emissions.

Just wondering if you were taxed on weight or price or what? Can I bring it back to CA right away?

Also wondering if anyone had the truck shipped, and if so how much was it?

TIA... ... . Jim

They sell CA certified trucks. They'll pick you up from the airport even. They have something like 4 shuttles just for this purpose.

I received a quote from them, it was simply unbelievable. I'm buying my next truck from them. Shoot me a p. m. if you want a contact to deal with.

You can bring it here right away, but I'm not sure if they can roll the registration fees into your financing.

I figured it would be $1000 extra after i got their crazy low quote to get it to Fresno. $1200 was to have it shipped and with the high fuel prices is OCT. and not cheap plane flights i figured around $1000. A dealer down here couldn't believe the quote, so i told him to put us on speaker phone and listen for his self. He made the deal with $800 over Dave Smith. Since then I got a car saleman liscence and am selling dodge diesels through a local dealer. I curious to see how cheap i can buy and sell them now.

I have one on order right now with DSM and it was a little over 10k off msrp as for the plane ticket $160. 00, so I will pick it up and drive back to put some miles on it before I tow my toybox.

On order: 06 3500, Laramie, quad, DRW, 4. 10s with exhaust break!

I ordered one back in October. Very good price, plane ticket 140. 00, looking forward to the drive. As for your questions, you will need a certified weigh slip, you pay taxes on purchase price you pay lic fees on your weight. You will have to go to DMV to have it looked at but then your done. Not too much trouble, especially if you look at what you can save. I had a guy(salesman) close to my home town say he would not compete with DSM but I would lose out in the long run due to other costs. Well I did the math and Even flying back there fuel and one night in a motel I will still be way ahead. Now if I could just get a rail car to delivery it from Mexico. That is my hold up due to the season no trains until after christmas.

I just picked up a 2005 3500 TD for Dave Smith. Granted the price was good. But... . there's a BUT... There were all kinds of screw-ups on the accessories. I was a day late starting a drive across the USA owing to the need to go back to have the lights they put in focussed correctly... after having been assured that the accessories salesman would make certain they were and that he had done so, They duct taped the wiring of a 12V outlet and battery I had ordered to be installed in the canopy which, of course, fell out and is flopping around and must be redone (they offer to pay for the redo), I was left standing outside the business manager's office for 10 or 15 minutes as the BIG BOSS(as described to me) interrupted him and, as the salesman put it, customer's come first... usually..... the boss in question a Mr. Ken Smith didn't even give me the courtesy of suggesting we wait in a comfortable location, ultimately we did leave and found someone else to close the purchase with, And the rubber mat for the bed was not installed even though the saleman said he would insure that it was, etc etc... and the canopy arrived 10 days after I was told it would ( I was flying in to pick up the truck so accurate timing was critical)... and there were a series of other "troubles and irritations" mostly focussed on the accessories portion of the dealership.

All in all It was a marginal experience. Savings yes... but at a price. I would not be apt to repeat the experience...

 I beleave that all the states where you now purchase a vehicle will collect the tax at the time of purchase and then cut you a check back for the DMV (state tax). You have to tell them your tax rate so they can figure it into the sale. The truck will need to be weighed in california and you will need to pay for license costs.

Picked up my 2005 3500 in March of this year. They quoted me a price that was at least 2K lower then I could get at my local dealer. They picked me up at the Spokane airport and drove me to the dealer in Idaho. Test drove the truck, committed to buy it, and had them spray in a bedliner, put bug guard on the hood, and gave me a day/night mirror (at cost). They figured the Washington State tax and license fees, collected them at closing, and I was out of the dealer's showroom in no time and drove back that afternoon. All and all, it was well worth going there... :D

It's unusual to hear any bad comments about Dave Smith. I bought my 2005 3500 there last February and was extremely pleased with the deal and the attention to detail. :D The accessories were installed quickly and to my satisfaction. I will buy from Dave Smith again... this time it'll be the wife's convertible! :-laf

just give tomey gun a call, I would be willing to bet he would match dave smith prices. when I bought my truck in '02 the dealer about had a cornary when I uttered the words dave smith!!!! it was like I had suddenly grabbed the hair on the back of their head and pulled up hard!!! they immediatly started talking real #'s not bull$hit. I ended up with almost what dave smith would do for me without the drive. be careful however, dealerships work you over on price, just when you think you have gotten the best deal, the finance manager will put the yank on ya if you are not careful.

remember take the MSRP or sticker price of the truck and X it by . 895 this will give you invoice price, so hypothetical truck MSRP is 40,000 invoice would be 35,800 minus incentives of say 2500+farm beureau+500 so the 40k truck should be able to be had for no more than 32,800 in the above example.

I have also found in most cases my formula for determing invoice price from MSRP is also effective on other makes of vehicles

Well, here's one for ya. I would not buy from them. I spoke with them on the phone, never once received a smokin deal like I have read about on here. They used very high pressure sales tactics on the phone, kept calling me but never got around to offering me a great deal. All the quotes they gave were no better or worse than I had received locally. I received a great deal of help from Tomeygun, who couldn't get me a CA certified truck at the time, but gave me the numbers so I could get a great deal on my truck locally. I also spoke with Dishman motors, dunno if they're still dealing like they used too though. I bought my truck locally for $400. 00 more than if I would've gone to Tomeygun. So, thank you Tom.

The other thing that bugs me with them is to the best of my knowledge none of their employees are Cummins enthusiasts. Several of our members work for dealers, are salesmen, etc. Perhaps we should support those who support this site.

JJ, I bought my truck from Autowest Dodge in Roseville, drop me a pm and I'll get ya the details on who to talk to. My salesperson rocked, got me all the answers I wanted and was patient beyond all belief with all my questions. If/when I get another Cummins it will be with her or Tomeygun if she can't get it done locally.

Jay

P. S. to those that had a great experience, I am glad it worked out for ya, all I'm saying is I did not care for their sales tactics and I think there are better dealers out there for us to support.

Well Jay, I guess you buy from the guy who treats you the best, so all we can do is speak from our personal experiences. The local dealers in Spokane and CDA didn't bother returning my phone calls or e-mail inquiries, while DS got back to me in about 10 minutes! Once you make the purchase, if you feel you were treated right and got a decent deal... it's all good!

I bought my '98 from Dave Smith Motors and the deal was smooth, painless, and best of all a bargin. The local dealers didn't even want to talk to me when I mentioned DSM.

In 2004, I bought a new 2500. DSM seemed very high pressure this time around... so that turned me off, especially since the price was only slightly less than what I found at Dishman Dodge in Spokane. The salesman at Dishman Dodge was great to deal with.

I purchased an 06' from Dave Smith Motors two weeks ago. This was my third vehicle purchase from them in the last 5 years, two Cummins Turbo Diesels and one Pacifica. I can't say enough good about the deal and the service I recieved from them. The salespersons I dealt with told it like it is and did not pressure me in any way. The pickup I bought two weeks ago needed to have several accessories installed which included a Jake Brake, retractable power steps, combination cd/sat/gps nav radio, spray in bed liner and 5th wheel hitch mounting rails. I did not think they could do all that to the rig during that same day because we did not close the deal until about 10am, but they did - turning the pickup over to me at 6:30 that evening complete as per my spec's. Every thing was done in a very workmanlike manner and I do not have a single complaint. Their price as usual could not be beat by any dealership I tried to deal with. The only thing the dealerships I contacted before I contacted Dave Smith Motors did for my was to remind me why I do not like to deal with car salesman and all their BS. I did not get that kind of treatment at DSM and never have when I bought other vehicles from them. Good people to work with. I will do the same again when I need to.

Well Jay... . I don't know what to tell you. Whenever I talked to them there was no dickering at all. It was strictly "INVOICE - INCENTIVES. " Here is what they did for me.

My 3500 had an MSRP of $41,640. The delivered "Invoice" price was $37,188. They reduced that by the following: $1,000 Chrysler rebate; $1,000 Chrysler finance; $500 Farm Bureau; $2,000 Dave Smith rebate. That was $4,500 off the invoice price and I bought it for $32,688 plus $674 for added accessories, and another $3220 for WA sales tax and licensing.

No other dealer came close to this... ;)

I almost bought my truck at Dave Smiths had given them a deposit. But weather turned real bad the week I was scheduled to fly up and drive it home I called my salesman who up till then had been OK, as soon as I asked him if because of weather I pick up my truck the following week or as soon as weather permited. He got real nasty with me started giving me ultimatumes. Said he could not hold truck and would place it back into the trucks for sale list. The truck was rare as at that time as there was the sales hold on G56s and it was a NV5600 in color I wanted with Larimie pkg heated seats. I call the Customer Service manager who it turns out is a member of this site and he made things right, said he would hold the truck for me. It turned out I couldn't get away so I called him back and told him because of weather and a wedding I could not make it to pick up truck he said OK and I got my deposit back in about a week. A month later I called him back and he set me up with a GREAT salesperson who did all he could to find me a NV5600 with heated seats did find me one in sports pkg But I didn't want painted bumpers and no chrome. But next time I would call Dave Smith again They have about 80 salespersons I understand. I would sure try to get a good on and not the first jerk I delt with Also Tomeygun is great for those closer to him than Dave Smith I do have the Customer Service manager and his recommended saleguy who was GREAT so if you ask I will look their names and #s up for you

Good Luck, Bill

After thinking on it some more and seeing a couple of postings pro and con, I suspect thast Dave Smith's operation has reached its natural growth point, built up its costs a little to high in anticipation of further growth and is now pressured. My experience of being left waiting demonstrates a changed attitude, customers are now a "given". I was repeatedly told that the salesman's family would suffer financially if I did not give a glowing report. So there is pressure there too.

I agree with the writer that said one should support their local dealers. Being located part of the time in Couer d' Alene, Smith's dealership is "local" for our offices, even though it is tough for me to get to from Toronto.

The folks at Smith's are not bad people, to the contrary. The behavior I saw and experienced was good people in a slightly messed up system, rushing to save time and save or make an extra buck because they feel they "have to. "

I now have the truck in Toronto over Christmas having had the worst drive ever through the snow and ice across the whole continent. . worse than my days in Alaska. The OEM Michelin tires have the wrong compound for winter. I put 600 llbs in the back (220 of that Elk meat) and it helped, but the Montana Passes and Wyoming hills were scary to go down. You had to be really really smooth not to break loose.

Now I have the nuisance of correcting the work that was either not done or done badly prior to delivery. So there goes another day. It was a marginal deal at best.

So far the truck is great. I agree the . 79 ratio in top gear is a little low for good economy and cruising. My mileages across the country varied from a low of 11. 5 in the coldest area (-6F) to 18 for the last little bit into Canada where it was +45F. I'm wondering if the Canadian fuel is different. Its very cold here now so I am sure its winter fuel. Average speed after the 500 mile break in was 72MPH going up to 80 now and then. Typically mileages were coming in in the 14MPH range.
