As the title says... ... ... ... ... ..... anyone put a Detroit in their D80? I'm looking at a sweet '01 with out the anti spin and will be looking at alternatives... ... ... ... ... ... I've driven Detroits in my 14 bolt equipped K5 with a TPI 406 motivating it, but a Cummins is so much more torque than the K5 had. They take some getting used to with the pushing characteristics, etc. but my real worry is the rain performance.

Any input, TIA.

I have been running a Detroit for the past 9 months. Supposedly the new ones are less harsh on engagement. It still sounds and acts like a normal Detroit. It does not bother me that it bangs, clunks and yaws from side to side a bit when going from coast to drive. I did not have luck witht he restack of the factory LSD (After the restack, it was a spool). The detroit is a beefy piece and have run them in just bout every vehicle I have owned.

So you've driven it in the Mass snow/ice? And survived obviously. Thanks for the input.

I tend to drive the winters with letting hte rear end do the steering. It increases the fun factor. I think that it is easier to drive a detroit in the snow/ice than it is to drive the peg-leg rear end.

FTwardoch,

Are you a user on ColoradoK5? Something tells me you are a user over there?

If so, what's your user name?

Hey Rob,

Yep, I'm BurbinOR over there (formerly BlazzinOR when I had the TPI406 79 K5). Getting real close to buying a CTD... ... ... ... ... real close. Oo.

I have been running a Detroit in rear of my gm 14 bolt for the last 500,000 miles without any issues at all other than normal detroit noises. Most of those miles were in front of a built 6. 5td but the last 25,000 miles have been in front of my cummins. Detroits are tuff! Having a little extra weight in the rear is a benefit in the snow and don't be afraid to use 4wd on the highway in the snow. My worst ohsh-----have been when the rear end broke loose on icy roads while trying to slow down using engine compression-instant sideways, sometimes you can correct and sometimes you can't. 4wd eliminates that problem. My front detroit, well that is another issue all by itself, not for the faint hearted on the highway, but unstoppable off road! :D :D

I knew it!

Frank,

I knew there was something farmiliar with your post. It's kinda funny, that we are all twisted up in the discussion at CK5 w/ Russ AKA BadDog about CTD. They just don't get the CTD thing.

I was with Marv_Springer tonight, had some problems with my Dodge 1500 blowing the upper radiator hose, he helped with hold the flashlight tonight, and I let him drive mine home from the repair, he had the whole :--) thing going on when I told him get on it a little on the interstate.

The CTD is the #hit towing in the hills with a heavy load.

Would not trade it for anything.

Glad you are thinking about the CTD.

See you over at CK5

Rob
