How does it sound with the exhaust brake on?

I had to add a resonator to my M085171 due to a very high pitch sound with the exhaust brake on.

I'm redoing my complete exhaust and don't want to do it twice if I can avoid it.

Pretty sure that's the Donaldson I'm running.
Outside the truck I can definitely hear when the EB is on but it doesn't bother either my wife or myself. Cant hear it at all inside the cab.

Thanks.

The muffler I have now is so loud that you couldn't have the windows down with it on.

How is it when towing?

John,

I installed the Donaldson 51" on my '05, but it is the 5" inlet and outlet version, since I did not want to change out the 5" magna flow piping system the previous owner installed, just the Magna-flow muffler. I also welded the cat back in, after I cut the end's of the cat until I got to a 5" diameter, so the cat now has a 5" in and 5"outlet. Everyday driving, pulling in and out of campgrounds and towing my 7K toy-hauler in the Sierra's it has been about perfect for me, the wife, and kid's. Not to loud, but still will set off car alarms in a parking garage. I have the PRXB Pac-brake with this set up, and you know the when brake is on, but not overbearing.
By the way, the Smarty UDC towing tune with the BBI's has been great!!! Thanks!!!

John, for what it is worth... When I changed back to the Holset from the Garrett turbo, I have noticed that the band clamp that holds the exhaust brake to the turbo now leaks and makes a high pitch sound. The brake flange isn't tight against the turbo flange. The flange on the Garrett must have been thicker and spread or expanded the ring. I need to replace it. You might check to see that yours is tight.
Even now with the modified Holset turbo, my exhaust is louder. I am real glad I still have the stock muffler.

Thanks Dan!

Is it a high pitch noise or just the standard exhaust brake noise?

Glad the tune is working well for you. I've been meaning to ask you but have been busy with TDY's and hunting trips.

Good to know, thanks.

I don't have any input on your question, but I do have the stock muffler from my 08. your welcome to it.

i am running the flow pro on my 08 and it whistles kinda loudly when the VGT turbo uses the brake feature. but normal driving it's nice.

Are you getting the noise from the tail pipe? Or from under the truck like a back pressure leak?

John,

I have never had the high pitched noise, only the silenced hiss at the exhaust tailpipe tip, and of course the exhaust backpressure sound through the engine air intake (which I like!) standard exhaust brake noise. I have the factory airbox and upgraded oem filter.

OK, my apologies - That's not the Donaldson I have. This is the 4" stainless system that Stan's Headers sells. It's expensive but well designed and built.
Mine is 34" long.
Most of the time It isn't any louder towing than the stock setup. Occasionally, at just the right load it might be slightly louder but not by much and there's never a drone.
I didn't want a lot of noise and overall I am happier with this muff than I thought I would be.
Oh and it sounds incredible at idle outside the truck.

I have a Donaldson (not sure which one - I will try to find out) and a resonator and an EB and it is not loud at all - you can tell when the EB is working, but barely.

The high pitch sound I got was from the tailpipe. Just the sound of the brake working.

Thanks everyone. I'll go with the 51" muffler.
