I'm in need of tires and just about choked when I saw the price of the Michelins I'm currently running ($159 each). The BF Goodrich Commercial TAs are $105 each and are "rated" at 50k miles.

I don't put a lot of faith in mileage ratings because, like fuel mileage, that is under ideal conditions that I'll probably never see. I'm just wondering if there is a good alternative to the Michelins - I like 'em, but $45 difference in price per tire is kinda hard to swallow... . ;)

Any opinions? I buy all my tires from Discount Tire, and the BFGs are the only other ones they stock that I'm seriously considering right now.

Yep... i liked my old set.

I ran my truck d350 pretty hard and for a 6200 sports car

the ta's lasted close to 40K even with me being rough on them.

And FYI Michelin makes the bfgs..... so its all good.

Dan - I've been running the BFG's for 30k miles. They still look good ! I rotate them every 10k miles and run Equal balancing beads as well. Sam's Club usually has them for around $89 carryout! I would buy them again over the Michelins. They are a tough tire for the money! MJ

Thanks, guys!:) Glad to know they're a good tire, and the price is right. Discount has 'em for $105 mounted and balanced - a little more than Sam's Club but I've had excellent luck with Discount's warranty so it's worth it to me. :)

Now I just have to figure out what to do about wheels. Wonder how much I can get for a kidney... .

get a written quote from sams and discount will match it!

Dan, ... . Are the BFG's a load range E ?. . Also what tire size are you going to run?... Aftermarket rims?... . I'm also looking for all of the above... ... Greg

BWK - I have a small cabover so it's good to know these will work good when I'm hauling it - thanks!:)

Robert - Good idea on the written quote, I'll have to give it a shot. :)

GGott - I'm looking at the 235/85/16s, load range E. I'll probably end up with 16x7 Eagle Alloy model 55 wheels (Outlaw II style). They're around $88 each from Summit Racing - haven't checked locally - and have a good weight rating (3420 lbs, IIRC). I really like the American Racing AR23s, but they're a bit more expensive. Alcoas are really nice but a bit out of my price range right now. ;)

Thanks!:) Unless I hear anything negative I'm going to give them a shot. I think they've been bumped down a notch on the list, though - I'm probably going to have a 4" exhaust installed in the next week or two. :D

I run these on my D350 -- great tire for the money. I have seen them in both "D" & "E" load ranges. About 50k miles seems to be what they last.

I have a set on the rear of my 1993 dually. They have fairly big chunks of tread that are missing after a few times on the rough dirt roads in the local mountains. When it was time to replace the front tires, I went with the Michelins. They just seem to hold up better. I am running more power than some with a turned up P pump motor, but that shouldn't be that hard on the tires.

Know what you mean about the dirt roads around here - many years ago I wiped out a new set of tires on my dad's Datsun truck going over Gunsight Pass... 2WD trucks, lots of loose, jagged rocks, and teenage drivers don't mix.

About 90% of my driving will be on pavement, and almost all the rest will be on graded dirt roads. I have the Jeep for the fun stuff. :D The only time the truck will see anything rougher than a bladed dirt road is when I head up to Big Lake - my usual camping spot has a short but rocky trail. I was a little concerned about the el-cheapo tires on my trailer a few weeks ago, but thankfully I never heard that awful hissing sound. :D

Thanks for the info, and how about posting some pics of your truck so I'll know to wave when I see you on the road. :)
