If your build date is 4 Mar 09 or later than you have the secure bootloader. 09's before this date the Insight should work fine.

The problem with locking up ECMs is that the Insight is supposed to be a "monitor" or reading the OBD broadcast. I talked with some Controls Engineers at Cummins and they assured me that if the device is only READING the OBD output, that the Secured Bootloader will not trigger. Any attempts to WRITE to the ECM will lock up the module... ..... therefore, one has to assume that the Edge Insight is trying to write to the ECM or is somehow setting a parameter bit..... which means it is not simply Monitoring or Reading the datastream - right? Possibly this is a result of the Fault Code reset commands which is triggering the lockup??

I sure would like to have one so a friend can test it in the Controls lab to verify performance without locking up my own truck's ECM..... but would hate to spend the money for nothing if it repeatedly crashes the secured test module.

Mikey - any success with the Quadzilla Scout yet?

No sign of Scout yet

I ordered it on Friday and haven't even got a shipping confirmation yet, but I'm hoping to get it soon. Also ordered a set of stacks for the wife's truck from the same place a couple days before that and haven't seen confirmation on them either.

Your bring up some very good points (Reader vs Writer) and why the Insight would lock-up the secured ECM. I would say that you are correct in assuming that the Insight is not just monitoring but also sending a write command. On your other point the new ECM's I would think would allow fault code resets without locking up as it is not requesting a write but if this were the case then scanner tools that clear codes would not work either on these trucks. I do not see how Edge cannot fix this glitch without waiting for a $600 solution, I mean come on already this is just a monitor. :-laf Who would of thought buying one of these verses gauges would be so difficult.

I take that your in Columbus and work for Cummins? If your friend has access to test one that would be good for me and others as well. I was wanting the Insight or Quadzilla Scout but I am holding off until this gets identified. Your test results might prove invaluable for us. Keep us posted.

I in no way meant to imply the the Insight would lock the ECM. Sorry for any confusion :eek: I just merely stated that I have one of the new ECM's (that lock with a downloader) and mine is not compatible with the Insight. My truck suffered no ill effects from hooking one up. I'm just really bummed out that it didn't work and that I will have to go a different route. :{

I do have some good news though... I should be getting my Scout on or around the 9th :D I will post my results as soon as I see if it works or not.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will...

Mikey-KE7LBB, after you posted about the Quad Scout I looked at one online and seems to have everything the Insight has (maybe more). I like the small footprint and quick install of this monitor and I will check back to see what your thoughts are on the one you get. Did you order the pillar mount?

I haven't ordered any kind of mount as of yet. I may end up getting a dash pod for the Insight and modifying it. I'm sure a little creativity will make it fit nice. I like the looks of the dash pod as opposed to getting a pillar mount, but I may end up having to do just that. If I can get it to fit and look good, I'll post some pics. I want to see if it will work first before I buy any mounts and end up returning them. I do have an Adrenaline with the Pulse Control Module that looks the same as the Scout or Commander mounted in the pillar of the wife's 01 and it doesn't look too bad.

Good news everyone!!!

Oo. I got a surprise from UPS today!! Oo.

Seen the Scout was delivered and didn't even get all the way dressed before opening the box on the way to the truck brrrr... -7 at the moment

I was sitting in the driver's seat shivering and plugging stuff in (all before reading instructions of course :-laf) and to my surprise... IT WORKS!!! :D

I set up the displays and some warnings and it seems pretty easy just like the Adrenaline with the Pulse module for my wife's 01

I haven't mounted anything yet or done a road test, but got the satisfaction of seeing that the newer 09's haven't been shut out from everything.

Now I know it works I will be looking at the Insight dash pod to see if I can modify it to fit and if not I'll get the pillar mount from Quad

I've been quite busy lately and haven't had time to do anything with it yet. I work in the oilfield and this time of year poses some challenges and long hours dealing with freezes.
It's still sitting on the console awaiting some ambition and a pod of some sort to mount it. I'll post with pics when I get it all done. Need a few days off to relax and do something I want for a change.
I have had a chance to test it out and it works, but I did find out that with the boost fooler plugged in it sometimes throws a code and confuses the scout until I remove it. The fooler throws an EGR code on occasion and is normal to do so from what I've read on other posts. Scout won't clear the code as long as problem exists from what I can tell. As long as everything is stock it works like a champ.

Thanks... ... good to hear it works ok on the newer Boot-Loader ECMs without locking everything up.

Oh BTW - Are you able to see when any Regens are occurring?

I haven't driven it far enough for a regen since I got it. It does show desired regens, completed regens, incomplete regens, DPF load and target and many more things related to emissions. I am very satisfied with all the stuff it reads and can't wait til I finish with getting it installed.

I didn't forget about you guys

I'm sorry it's been so long getting back. I was so busy working and never had any time to do anything until last night. The Scout has been sitting in the cup holder and the little module stuffed in the slot under the stereo since I got it. I still haven't put the EGT probe in the manifold yet because I can't find my tap and keep forgetting to pick one up when I go to town every two weeks or so.

I finally got my Quad pillar mount that had been on back order for almost a month. I had the install done in about 10 min :-laf It looks really nice and is easy to see the screen and cruise through the menus.

I'm very pleased with it and it sure helps knowing what the truck is doing. Since I can now see when the truck is in a regen, I just drive it until it's finished instead of always wondering if I'm shutting it off when everything is 1000* or more.

Thanks for the update Mikey... ..... so the Scout is working on that secured ECM just fine... ... ... any pictures? Oo.

Also - where did you buy yours... ... . found one at XDP for $222 plus free shipping...

I got mine through XDP and I later ordered the pilar mount from them.

One thing I did notice about it and forgot to mention is that it would freeze up about half way through a regen and not display data changes until it finished. There is an update on Quad's page for a temp correction and it took care of that issue as well. So far that is the only problem I've had. Also when clearing codes, you need to cycle key to run and retrieve codes then clear them before starting the truck.

I didn't take any photos yet because I can't find my camera. I'll try to get a one with my phone and see if I can figure out how to post it.

Here's some pics :)

#1 is where I mounted the module that everything plugs into to the clutch pedal mount bracket just above the wiring harness using the velcro that came with the kit. It fits perfect!!

#2 is a side view of the screen in the mount

#3 is the grommet where I ran all of the the wires for my radio and the EGT probe lead out through the firewall

Very easy install and couldn't be happier :D

The custom screens that you choose for what you want to monitor has an option for EGT and that is the one you would place in the manifold. The other EGT's are monitored by the ECM and displayed on the emissions screen along with data from O2 sensors and MAF sensor.
There are the two custom displays that you choose with up to four things you want to monitor and you toggle between them with the bottom button. The two buttons in the middle will toggle to the DPF parameter screen that shows filter load, target, # of regens desired/complete. The next one is emissions and has O2 sensor data, cat 1 and cat 2 temps (this is where you can see regen), EGR commanded, and mass air flow. The third time you press will bring the trouble code screen that shows time and distance with MIL, # of warm-ups since clear and run time etc... and press again to get back to custom screen.
Hope it makes sense.
