When I bought my truck, I bought a lifetime oil change package. I get it changed every 3000 miles... . they use Pennzoil. What do you fellas think?

Thanks for any and all opinions;

Paul

nothing wrong with that oil. any of the major brand diesel oils [shell, chevron, castrol, penzoil, mobil, valvoline... ] are all good oils. they are sorta like beer eh. some you personally like, some you don't, but all do the same job in the end ;)

. . . and of all the oils available out there Pennzoil is the last oil I would put in my Cummins, because of horror stories I've heard from three mechanic friends of mine who've worked on engines run on Pennzoil (badly gummed up, loads of deposits). Maybe they're better now but in the 80s at least they had some not such good stuff.

I used to use Pennzoil all the time, but since Shell bought them and closed the Rouseville, Pa refinery, it is not even made with Pennsylvania crude oil anymore. I avoid it now as a protest. BUT, I do use Shell Rotella and it is probably the same stuff in a different can.

I have ran Penzoil 10-30 in my 90 Ford gasser since it was new, changed every 3000 miles. I had to pull the head off last spring, a buddy who is a mechanic could not believe how CLEAN everything was. So I think It is good oil, although I think I will stick with Delo Synthetic for my CTD or something similiar.

What did that cost?

It cost $600. Since this is the last truck I'm going to buy, I figured I would come out ahead in the end. Plus, they wash the truck too :D

Thanks for all your feedback guys.

I wouldn't worry about it. The SAE ratings and viscosity are what matters. The additive package in their 15w-40 has to be adequate for it to make the CI-4 or CI-4 Plus rating. They should have a badge or sticker on the drum of the oil and you can see if it's current and has the current rating. Make them show you. If it's proper, you're fine, IMHO. Good luck!

I try to use Pennzoil "Long-Life" in both my trucks. However, Wal-Mart no longer carries it, or at least I haven't found it. So, I now use Delo 400 as Costco carries it.

I like the Pennzoil as from a Union 76 Rep (C. E. Bryant in Fresno) told me many companies use it for the bas oil in their synthetic. Apparently it is very close or it is a synthetic.

Any I like it, maybe I can find it when we move to Indy, tomorrow!

Some time ago a friend (repair shop owner) was involved in a test of name brand oils, "Pennzoil" came in DEAD LAST, I wouldnt run in my lawn mower. :(

I am a mechanic for Fed Ex. We have been using Pennzoil 15-40 longlife for 2 years now. I have not seen or heard of any problems. We have a combination of Common rail , ISB and 6BT diesels at my station. Except for the lift pump and VP44 Failures all has been well.

I have to agree with Vaughn! Pennzoil is also known for foaming.

I have Run Pennzoil for 33 years in gassers,i have 8 brothers they all run it,My dad run it for 30 years in a 391 Ford Truck engine pulling 60,000 lbs,i have personaly seen this engine torn down,it was as clean as a pen inside. reason it was torn down was the heads a lotta heat. But in the 5. 9 i run rotella 15-40... So were talking 9 people who has run this oil for about 30 years, and not one failure..... Plus 2 brothers run it in a $45,000. 00 race car engine.....

Just make sure they are putting real DIESEL oil in your Cummins... not oil for a gasser. (You might be surprised how many people do not realize there is a difference!) If it meets the government service specs, it can't be that bad.

NOt bad at all, $6 per oil change and truck wash assuming she make it to 300,000 miles. Even at half the longevity $12 per change is not bad either. Was that through the dealer? I move a lot.

I know dodge sells coupons that are good nation wide but would yours be?

I have used Pennzoil for many years... used to turn wrenches in New York where Pennzoil and Quaker State were #1 and #2 being used. Everyone loved Pennzoil, but the old oil had a lot of parafin (wax) in it that caused things to get gummy. There was always a lot of crud in the heads and the valve covers were generally awful... however the bearing were always in really good shape. We all thought that Pennzoil left some crude behind but lubricated better than anything else...

Today, that has all change and there is no wax in anyone's motor oil... as stated, Pennzoil now belongs to Shell, and I am sure it is all different... still good. I would use it today, except that I can't seem to find the 15w40 long life. For $6. 00 A CHANGE, IT IS ALMOST FREE..... great deal with a good oil...

Mine is through Lithia Dodge, and I've already checked the oil they use... it's the right stuff .

Pennzoil long life 15W-40 has a VI index of 136 and TBN of 11.

Delvac 1300 15W-40 has a VI Index of 133 and a TBN of 12

Both have sulfated ash at 1. 3.

On paper, this oil is as good as Delvac-Delo-Rotella.

All the big brands are so close, that it really does not matter. Oo. :D

That sounds logical to me DHerzog, I guess it could explain what I have heard. Still wouldn't want to take any chances running it in my Cummins though. I did try Pennzoil synthetic in '98 on my Bronco II and not long afterwards I had to tear the motor down due to destroyed bearings, but I don't think the oil was the cause of that since I had a small head crack which cause a slow coolant leak into the crankcase.

I had the "lifetime oil change deal" at Lithia and sold it back. They charged me $650 for that wonderful option. The reason I sold it back was on my 04, they were using Delo 400 and that was fine. I could get my oil changed every 2500 if I wanted. Then when I bought my 04. 5, I took it in for the first oil change and there was a Quaker State sticker on my windshield! I questioned them about this and they said it was a "Corporate Decision". Yeah, poohey! Quaker State gave them a deal, thats all. Their regular price for a full service lube oil filter is $40 and they WILL use Delo if you pay an extra $4 bringing it to $44 that I now pay every 3000 miles. Im ok with that. I have always used Delo in all my diesels and Im very happy with it. I just couldn't see having the lifetime oil change deal at $650 and still having to kick in another $4 on every oil change.
