I'd say Bayer does the best quality work even though I have only seen pictures. Mine is fine but it has alot of that "conversion van" quality parts in it. I bought mine from the 2nd owner, first was his uncle that passed. He indicated a little over $10K, this was in 1995.
 
check my earlier post i put the website mine cost about 14k so yes it is cheaper then a new larger truck and about the duriblity i would say the frame extension is stronger than the stock frame
