For those who remember my question of upgrading to a 6 speed. .

Well, drove my second 6 speed on Saturay. Took my father and neighbor for additional "opinions". The result is that I'm keeping my 98. 5 Auto. I'm sure the fact that the second truck ground 2nd & 4th gear didn't help, but $$ was the deciding factor. None of us could justify shelling out close to $10K for rear disc brakes and a HO 6 speed. When I have a perfectly good truck.

If I was looking to buy a truck, it be a six speed. But as an upgrade... I can't do it.

ANYWAY... Per the conversation driving home, it appears I will do the only logical thing. .

Send my 98. 5 into the shop as a sheep, and look for a wolf coming out.

Here's my plan, please feel free to add.

To the transmission:
I'm gunna have a DTT TC,VB and Mag-Hytec transmission pan installed.

To the 5. 9:
DDII injectors, 4" exhaust and a "box". I'd think about the DDIII's but I don't want a lot of smoke.

Interior:
Pyrometer, boost, and transmission temp gauges.
Dynomat and new speakers.

I have a few questions:
Considering the transmission work I'm having done. What kind of "box" should I get?

What else should I consider?

BTW: Where would be the best place to have all of this done, being from Allentown, PA?

I'm hoping Bill chimes in... considering he's about to get a new customer.

I think that you are doing it right. I recomend the DD's version of the EZ, as it is set up for DD to be compatable with the upgraded injectors. You will be extremly pleased with the bomded PSD whupper you will have when it is done. You will need to do the power up grades before you do the transmission so it can be set up ( shift points, pressures etc ) that need to be tuned to the engine power level. Do not get a variable box as they are not automatic friendly ( call Bill ). www.dieseltrans.com

Hello,

I have a few questions that I am in hopes you can answer... I own a 2001 Dodge 4X4 235 HP diesel, I am looking into
doing some mods on the engine but understand some transmission work would be in order.

I think I am going to be installing one of the new "Poweredge Comp" boxes plus 275 injectors. In speaking with the
folks at Poweredge this combination should produce 150 additional HP plus 300 or so additional LBS of torque.
What would be your recommendations for my transmission? I seldom tow with the truck (when I do it is only a light load
4000lbs or so). Normally just driven everyday on the street.

Cost is a consideration, but doing something right the first time is cheaper than the alternative. Also do you know
anyone in my area who could perform the upgrades with your parts? I live in Hummelstown, PA... near Harrisburg.

Thanks for your reply and help.

Doug Smith

As you can tell by our website we handle edge products, when choosing power upgrades for your ram, i do not recommend
the variable power boxes for the automatic .
You are turning on and off 150hp, it is extremely difficult to set up the perfect transmission combination for this type of
application. You are better off going with their eze box and a bigger set of injectors to achieve the desired power level you
want.
This allows you to calibrate the trans perfect as the hp is fixed . The new comp box has not yet been released to my
knowledge so i do not as yet have the transmission calibration for it.
With that kind of power upgrade you will be replacing your tc and vb. Most likely your turbo to allow more airflow to keep
up with the fueling.

Bill

Note this truck has the small HY turbo

Hi Doug,

I live just south of Harrisburg. Miller Diesel on Jonestown Rd are very good diesel people. I don't know if they do trans work or not? Ashland diesel in Ashland Pa are another diesel shop in the area. Good luck with your new truck. Jeff

You made the right choice. As much as I love shifting and all the advantages of a manual transmission, I would go auto if I was buying again today. You just don't know how awesome the DTT tuned auto is until you have driven one. If I was you I would put in DDIII's and their version of the EZ like JNutter said.

My DTT TC/VB got installed today. I can not believe the difference. The DD2's and DD TTPM go in on Saturday.

The entire install went perfect. The technican even remarked how easy it was. DTT rules #ad

Wanna' spend money on your truck, just call Ted Jannetty, he'll be more than happy to help! Oh and do a good job for a fair price too. You're close to him, I have to drive thousands of miles up from Tennessee(well maybe hundreds of miles)to get to his shop!

The only thing i have against variable power boxes is that most guys dont have the patience or transmission expertise for the additional setup & tweaking required to make these transmissions perform at their peak with the variable boxes. When trying to set up your transmission to match your engine upgrade, the transmission tv cable(kick down cable)can be one of the most challenging of all the adjustments. You are looking for a one to one ratio between your fuel pump lever and your transmission tv lever. Anyone that has ever tried to do this will know exactly what i am talking about.

When you are turning on and off 100+hp with the flick of a switch it throws your transmission adjustment out of wack. You usually end up compromising to make the truck perform and shift at exceptable levels.

It is much easier and more accurate to calibrate the transmission shift points and pressures when you are working with fixed hp.

If anyone wants to check their cable adjustments, simply have someone step on the throttle inside the cab and watch the tv lever at the transmission for movement.

The kickdown lever (tv) should start moving within 10% of the fuel pump throttle lever.
At full throttle, you should have approx 1/8th " -1/4" play left at the kickdown lever.

Most transmission shops that have been around the drag racing and around street rods recognize this method of adjusting the kick down cables.

It is not as simple as it sounds, sometimes it involves changing the tv springs, sometimes you have to change the inboard throttle valve, or the governor solenoid, sometimes you even have to do all three.

You have to have the ability to diagnose which one to do based on the symptoms or combination of symptoms.

Everyone has the right to choose what kind of power upgrade the want, but you should at least when choosing these type of upgrades consider the above senarios as they play a key role not only in the performance of your vehicls but transmission durablity.

If you really wanted the manual transmission you could always swap one of those in too. Enterprise Engine Performance does manual transmission swaps - $5300 for a brand new NV4500 and a Mcleod dual disc clutch installed, the NV5600 (6sp) is $700 more.
