Anyone with these tires?

I've ALWAYS used BF Goodrich AT tires but now I'm getting close to needing to replace them and my usual store doesn't have a location where I plan to move to. Not to mention, the prices are way too high now ($1,024 for BFG) in comparison to others so I'm entertaining the idea of competitors now.

Big O has the XT and Goodyear has the MT/R which seem (visually) to be equivalents. Anybody running these and what are your thoughts/experiences?

Probably looking to put 285/75/16's on to replace the 265's in place now.....

I have 285s, even though the mpgs are a little worse, i like the added traction they give. I drive about 50,000 miles a year and i used to run 255s and i would be lucky to get 35-40,000 miles out of them. The tire shop told me that all my tourqe was eating the rubber up So i went to th 285s and have 30,000 on them and have half the tread left( with rotating them every 3,000). So if you drive alot of miles and don't want to buy commerial rims and tires the 285s are decent, just my 2 cents worth.

I don't have first hand experience with later models of the MT/R's but I used them a long time ago (20years) when I was really into 4 wheeling. They were great off road but wore rather quickly. That being said, tire technology has changed dramatically in the last 20 years and it may really be comparing apples to grapefruits. I ended up going with the bridgestone dueler at revos. They are not as aggressive as either of the two you mentioned. They have been great so far. You are more than welcome to come up and drive the truck to see if you like the way they handle. They have about 20k on them now and if they continue at this rate I wil probably get about 50k-60k out of them. Also we could knock out that under bumper gaurd if you like. By the way where are you moving too? Hopefully not out of the area.

Vaughn, i don't see any clowns that could pick up an 285 that would be amazing to see a clown do an actual job though!Oo. The tire shop that i go to has a warranty and a part of that comes free rotation which is great for someone like me, and they do in about 20 minutes from the time i get there to the time i leave. they are actually really good.

I haven't had any experience with either tire. back when I had my half ton I installed a set of 285 Buckshot's and was thoroughly impressed. I drove that truck hard and in the 15000 miles I had on the tires when I sold the truck I couldn't see any wear. In relation to the other manufacturers, the Buckshots are way cheaper. I believe I ended up paying about $90 a tire installed at the local farm supply place. The tires are rated as Load Range E and I think they are either 8 or 10 ply. You can get more information on them at www.maxxistire.com. If I was going to buy a set of mud tires right now, those would be the ones. They pull awesome off-road, not too noisy, and acceptable tread life.

If that's what the M in mtr stands for then I might be swayed immediatly away from them. I'm looking for a great on/off road tire (all-terrain) for snow, rain, dirt, pavement and while I'd love the grip I need something that has long wear. The BFG's siped have been perfect but really expensive. So it looks more like the big o brand or the BFG. I understand the BFG is great through previous experience but I don't have the level of confidence in the other brands yet and hopefully SOMEONE that has bigfoot XT's or AT's on can weigh in here... ... .

ps. I just can't believe I'm shopping for tires after only 20k+ miles. The stock Michelin's (LTX M/S's) leave ALOT to be desired.....

MT/Rs

I am running 265/75 MT/Rs. They are a mud-terrain version but I believe the acronym stands for "Maximum Traction/Radial". I could be wrong.



They wear fast. On dirt roads, if you peel out, don't be surprised if rubber flies off. I have about 15,000 on mine with 50% left. Not something I want to stick with the way I drive



I know the owner of the local Big O. He sent me to Goodyear with a Big O shirt and I bought them for cost. Not a bad deal at the time!

Wally World has their Liberator (made by Michelin for Walmart) all terrain tires in 285/75R-16 for $94 each. They are load range D and ride/perform well. I have them on my truck to include the spare tire. (just barely fits) The big advantage here is the road hazard warranty that gives you free balance & rotates plus free tire repair/replace. I have the OEM Michelin MTX A/S tires stored (less than 1,000 miles on them). Will sell them for $110 each.

I don't have any experience with the MT/Rs but I have been told bya friend whos inlaw's ran them that they don't hold up well under the front of our trucks. I previously had BFG AT 285-75/16s. When I went looking I wanted 305-70/16s but was having troulble finding some with a tread pattern, the BFGs weren't available at that time in that size, and price I liked. I drive mostly on road but do do some farm/field driving. I went with MasterCraft Courser CTs. They had a 50,000 mile waranty. I have about 30K on them now. They are wearing decent, I'm not the best at rotating them, and it kind of show but they should make the 50K mark. The price was great, $550 for all 4 mounted and balanced. Even if they only make 40 to 45K I am still well aheat of the $1000 mark for the MT/Rs or the BFGs. At this point the same thing will go back on when the time comes.

I'd say keep shopping for BF Goodrich, your price sounds too high. I got 285 AT's for $185. ea.

I'll be very lucky however to get 30,000 miles out of them.

I have had two sets on my truck. 245/75 the first time and 265/75 the second time.



Likes:



Great tracktion in just about anything you get into



Noise wasn't bad



Drove well on the highway (no wandering and good response)



Did well with a heavy load in the truck and pulling a trailer.



And I would buy another set.



Dis-Likes:



They don't last to long. 25k on the first and 35k on the second.



They are kind of expensive. That's why I'm trying out a set of Yokos



I'm propably the worst at rotating my tires, so if you rotate and rotate offen you might get better mileage than I did. I tow heavy a lot so tires don't usually last me too long anyways.

Thanks for the reply's! Tomscreek-I've found them about 190/ea here, I'm looking to replace the spare too so that's 5 of them, add mount/balance/road hazard and I'm over $200/ea which throws the bottom line over $1k fast. That's what I'm trying to avoid... .



Thanks Garrett! That's the info I'm interested in. Since the stock one's only got to about 25k I'm worried that the XT's might wear too fast too. The BFG's I've had before (two sets) have gone 50k but that's on a MUCH lighter jeep not the Ram.

Big o has the full replacement guarantee and I wonder if that includes wear now... time to surf!

I'm beginning to lean toward the Buckshot now or rfraziers idea.

I just put my upteenth set of 35X12. 50 BFG AT's on my truck this morning. I share your feelings in that they always last me 50-60K before they need to be replaced. What I don't understand is the cost, I just paid under $700 for all 4 this morning. What gives???



PS. I put in the counteract beads instead of balancing them. Boy do they work great and for the $6. 00 per tire they cost, you'll never have to balance them again!!

Oh yeah I am so done with BFG's (Been a great 15 years guys) Like I have said it before I have run Mud terrains for 15 years on EVERY truck I have ever owned. From 35X12. 50/15 , 265/75/16 to 255/85/16 I have had em all and have loved em.



But Now they want 170 a piece for the BFG Mud Terrains in a 33. 2inch (255/85/16) configuration. I am makin' the switch to somethin' else in a mud tire for far less (Kellys are the EXACT tire for 124 each?) It's a shame cause they allways have worn well for me (Even if I give them the box set to "Moron" treatment) But all In All the tires come from One mold and are sold off to be branded by various "Manufacturers). So be it.

You may want to look at the Yokos, they come with a 40k mileage prorated manufactures warranty. Plus you get a 30 day drive and try with a money back guaranty (not credit). I found my set at Discount Tire Co. and you get their standard replacement and road hazard warranty on top of Yokohama's.



But with these Geolanders they have a lot of road wander. Other than that they work real good in the mud and the muck (hunting) and we will see how they do this winter. So far if I were to buy another set I wouldn't go with the 285/75, I'm thinking the 265/75 would be better. With a trailer plugged in, man you get the tail wagin' the dog bad.

I had a set of 265/75 Kelly Safari MSR's on my Duramax back when I had it. I bought the truck with 41k on it and sold it with 70k. Right after I bought the truck I put the tires on it, then used the truck to tow my hay trailer (very heavy). In addition I had the Juice and there was A LOT of play time with it too. The tires still had at least 25% tread left when I sold the truck and I know I could have gotten another 10k out of them if not more. I was very impressed by how well they pulled in the mud. Highway ride was acceptable as well.
