Anyone's fan come off?

So I'm idling the truck this moring before work and hear a weird chinging noise from under the hood, sounds like something rattilng. So I shut the truck off, grab a step ladder, reach in quick, grab the fan and it moves left and right relaly loose, clunk clunk. So I shut the hood, get in the car, go to work. Call the dealer (water pump is still under warranty) a set up and appointment for tomorrow.

I come home today and look closer and the fan has come unscrewed from the waterpump shaft and is wedged down in the lower pulley.



Anyone else have this.

My guess is last month I think they would have taken that off because the were replacing the crankshaft seal and they didn't put it back on tight enough.

sorry to hear your fan came off, but I don't think the fan is directly conected to the waterpump.

no the fan is not connected to the water pump... . amsoilman is correct... the water pump is held in place with 2 or 3 bolts, can't remember for sure and runs from the drive belt... and the fan is connected to the fan clutch on its own drive system.....

Ok, thanks. I assumed it was connected to the water pump. I didn't look at it really close, I just saw the threaded shaft and assumed it was the water pump. This is my first diesel.



So the fan is driven by it's own pulley seperate from the water pump.

It's happended to a few, furtunately not mine. I had a buddy with an '03 dually loose the fan and it took out everything in the front of the motor. He was under warrenty and got it all replaced. He had low milage at the time and the dealer said it was an assembly plant issue.

Friend of mine bought a used 05 with 30k or so on it. Ac in op. Wire to fan clutch was torn and dealer repaired. Year later ac in op and engine temp was up. Not overheating but up. He opened hood,looked around and fan/clutch was lieing wedged into lower pulley. He picked it up and screwed it back on. All works OK again. I told him to add some lock-tight to the threads etc.

I had it happen on my 12V. I go real lucky, no real damage, just a small slice in my fan shroud. I ended up being able to just screw it back on.

It happened to my 2003 a few years ago. The bearings in the pully were completely toast. Thankfully the damage wasn't too bad but the bad thing was getting the truck towed back to Georgia. You can can buy the pulley assembly seperate and it's not bad to change.

You got lucky if you had no damage. While I didn't have it happen to my Ram, I did have a similar thing happen to my '70 Chrysler Newport. I had left the radiator overflow hose in the way of the fan blades without realizing it. Of course when I went to start it up the blades caught the hose, bent just right, and took out the radiatior. It made a heart wrenching "THUD". $400 later the local radiator shop put in all new parts. That's a REALLY expensive overflow hose! Worst part about it is that it was my own fault!

98 12v

I just did my KDP and was replacing the fan last night.

Torqued the 3 bolts in the bracket to 18flb as reccomended.

Couldn't get a torque wrench to the 4th one, occluded by the bracket and stays in,

but I got a wrench on it and cranked it down like the others.



To take the fan off easily, I did loosen the 6 or 8 little 10mm bolts around the cover of the clutch. Not sure how hard to torque those, but if they came out, I imagine the whole thing would vibrate off.



Should I be using blue locktite on the 4 bracket bolts and the front cover bolts?

Anyone know a torque spec on the little cover bolts?
