I want to thank each and everyone of you for your replies and experience.

TKempers' response regarding the brake pads makes sense to me. All that black powder on the front rims can't be too good for the paint considering the compound used to make the brake pads.

Thanks again to all of the TDR members who responded. The TDR membership is paying off in huge dividends with the amount of information you have at your finger tips.

I only can make a comment for Myself , Torque This , MassDiesel , And a few select others in the area that are not only plagued by this problem but for us 3500 owners the HUGE problem of the Fenders not even close to matching from the start! I think MassDiesel went the furthest with this issue and we still are searching for answers.

Body panel colors not matching is a different issue than little brown rust spots on the paint. If you have body panels that don't match from the factory and the vehicle never had any body or paint work done I would say you have a problem. If a panel has been painted and it doesn't match. You could try buffing the panel next to it and see if it is just dirt in the paint. Or it could be that the body shop didn't match the paint good enough and last but not least most time the paint needs to be blended into another panel so you cannot see the difference. If the vehicle came from the factory with the panels not matching it could have been damaged and repaired. Depending on what state you are in depends on whether they have to disclose the info. If the color difference is the the dually fenders in the back then they were probably painted at a different time than the rest of the truck and then installed on the truck when they were needed. I work with a guy that bought a new 2000 Dakota several years ago. Upon his inspection of the new truck he spoted the specks, before it even left the Dealership. They detailed his truck right away but there back now. I don't think his was due to brake pads.

As I stated above, it can be from anything that has to do with metal dust. Rail dust is just a generic term. Any type of grinding on metal can cause this problem. I can believe it is from the brakes but who knows.

Kat and everybody is right on the mark. It the brake dust from the rail cars.



I had it too, but I waxed most of it off (it took alot of elbow grease). Has show up in about eight months.



The dealership wanted to buff it out... but I didn't trust them (though it would leave swrills).

Yes, its rail dust. We do a lot of paint warranty for the local Dodge dealer.

My truck has it too, bad!



The clay bar we use is called "Clay Magic" and the kit is around $20. 00.

I haven't done my truck yet, really need to though. I have my work cut out for me, it also has black overspray on it and the right front still needs to be painted from where I nailed that deer last thanksgiving (body work has been done).

My truck was built in St. Louis and sold new in Missouri, so I doubt if it ever got on a train. My truck has been setting outside for over two years and the paint looks great (wax it every 6 months). I think it is the rail dust that is doing this to these trucks. I wonder if some are rail transported in enclosed carriers and others are transported in open carriers?

Mine has those little spots on the tail gate. I thought it was from the magnesium chloride they put all over the roads around here to melt the ice. It really causes stuff to rust.

I have the same problem, and claying it takes it off and the wax protects it from coming back as quick. My detailer friend calls it fallout. Like the others said, clay & wax is the simple cure. Good luck
