Is there an easy way?

Anybody had trouble with the APPS? At least I think thats the problem. Engine has to be up to temp. & 75 to 100 miles into the

trip before it starts screwing up. If you get the pedel in just the

right position the motor starts bucking & jerking real bad. If I floor

it or back off the throttle it quits doing it. Any one else have or had

these simptoms?Any suggestions welcome Thanks Rick

Yes I am having the same problem, as a matter of fact I just put in a post Monday asking for help. What is the APPS. I have chasing this problem for quite some time now.

APPS

Prostar

The APPS is the Accelerator Pedel Position Sensor. Most other

brands call it a TPS,Throttle Position Sensor. I guess we must the

only ones to experience this problem. Guess we'll have to wait &

see if any one else replies. Rick

Sensor

I had very similar problems this past winter/spring. After reading some other posts, I go to Cummins and got the following part #: 4002066. Called; Sensor, Position (according to my receipt). Total cost: $36. 00+Tax (Your price may vary!)

It was on the port side of the engine towards the back and the bottom. Mine was a PITA to get out... ended up breaking it.

Seemed to fix the problem though.

Best of luck to you.

hey RICK i have the excact same problem, did you figure it out? please let me know what your fix was. thanks

I had a slight hesitation on my truck. Eventually I got a code that said "both idle validation signals low" which meant a problem in the APPS. Replaced it and they both went away.

TMC, I think the sensor you are referring to is the Crankshaft Position sensor, or CKP for short.

I have only seen one APPS go out, and it would return the truck to a preset RPM when the fault occurred. The truck would just go dead at about 25-30 mph, but not every time. This was on a '99 5-speed truck. $360 later, the problem was fixed. This is an expensive one!

Tell me about it!

Replace the APPS about a month ago, 420$ + labor at my local stealer. My truck would do the same as Evan posted and would go from idle to WOT on it's own. No fun at all.

TPPS

Or at least that is what the dealers invoice showed as the part description when they replaced it on my 99/5sp when it started droping from cruising speed to an idle. It finally set the check engine light but I forgot to pull the code (I think the tech said it was P0224). The Throttle Pedal Position Sensor was replaced under the 3yr/36k warranty so I have no idea what the actual cost is.

Dodge part #53031575-AF. You'll need the scann tool to recalibrate the sensor, it won't know where the go pedal is. So your stuck going to the stealer anyway.

The APPS is a Dodge part, you can get it from Cummins but it's just as expensive. I paid a bit under $300 for mine but I get a discount from a local dealer - normal price is around $320 I think. BFC - you don't need the scan tool to calibrate it after install. I installed mine myself. Here's what the service manual says about calibration:

(11) ECM Calibration: Turn key to ON position. Without starting engine, slowly press throttle pedal to floor and then slowly release. This step must be done (one time) to ensure accelerator pedal position sensor calibration has been learned by ECM. If not done, possible DTC's may be set.

BTW, as said above the APPS is only covered under the 3/36 warranty - it's not a part of the 100,000 engine warranty.

Well crap....

I'm pissed now. See when mine crapped out my wife was having emergency surgery and when I asked the stealer to order the part and I would put it in, he told me that I needed the scan tool bla, bla ,bla. Well my mind being on more important things at the time(and he knew that) I never checked my service manual.

Just writing this is making me madder:mad:  Guess where I'm going after I'm done typing, *******s.

Steve thanks for posting the right info, didn't mean to spread bulls@%t around.

Sorry for venting,

Try the 100K warranty

I had the APPS poop out on the '98. 5 I had, at 49,000 miles. It went straight to idle as mentioned, was not fun.

This happened right after purchasing the truck used. The previous owner went to the dealer and finagled them into covering it under the 100K warranty. What ended up happening was the dealer took one off a new truck and we stuck it on and then the dealer put in a claim for a faulty on the hawked truck ( I think that is what happened anyway). I installed it and went through the little procedure where you turn the key on without the engine running and press the throttle to WOT a few times and then you're good to go. Piece of cake to replace.

The APPS(TPS)on our trucks is sensor that sends a varying voltage back to the ECM. The sensor has 6 wires on it. Three are used for Throttle Position and three for Idle Validation. Any sensor can fail but there is still wiring, connections and grounds can all affect the reading the ECM "sees".

It'll only set a code and turn on the check engine light if voltage goes real high (5 volts) or low (0 volts). Normal TPS voltages is in the range of . 7 to 4. 25V usually. It'll cause hicups and the converter clutch to unlock if voltage is unstable. The best way to check it is with a lab scope, but a good high impedance digital multimeter will work also. If you suspect the sensor you can check the signal wire for voltage. I can play with my truck and post some normal values if someone would like to know. Just post back to let me know and I'll get it posted in a couple days.

Has anyone had the DRB III on and played around? I have about 40 or 50 degrees difference between my temp guage in the dash and the scan tool value for engine temp. Guage is about 185 or so and DRB is reading 235. Wondering if this is normal?

TPS Cleaning

I remember reading on here about some people taking them apart and cleaning them. Something about they are supposed to be "sealed" unit, but after drilling out the rivets that hold it (the cover) together they are quite dirty. Clean them out good and put dielectric grease on wire contacts(after cleaning them too) has seemed to fix them.

I priced one at local Stealer, $270.
