Offer ends 2/29/2012!
Passing this on for TDR shooters who enjoy smacking Gongs and SillouettesOo. .
The material is AR-500 steel. Highly impact resistant. Almost "armor plate". Commonly used as wear strips and edge blades on excavator buckets and grader blades. Very HARD! You can pit them with penetrators. However, this is not recommended as a smooth surface creates a predictable spatter pattern. For range use as well as your own personal and mobile plinking activities.
Furthermore, the money is for a good cause.

GHarm, just now getting the time to prowl around a little. Been a busy month!! What are these guys? How do those targets stand up against copper jacketed rifle bullets? I was thinking about making gongs at 400, 750yds, and 1500, with my centerfire rifles. Mostly match bullets, I'd think, maybe a few hunting bullets from time to time.....

I've got some 10" oilfield valve plates I've been going to hang, I just haven't had time. It think they're some high nickel alloy. They won't rust!! But they don't look like SS. Some non-ferrous, I'm guessing.....

HHhuntitall, Just passing on information from 6mmbr.com.

AR-500 is HARD! However it depends with what you want to shoot at it! Lead cored match bullets, I dont believe you would hurt the stuff. A . 50 with solid bronze Barnes bullets may cause damage to the plates and ricochet issues at the near distances. Using 1/2" AR-500 would not be a good choice for the big boomers, IMHO. They will still bend, when hit with the big stuff, especially if the have been welded to a support arm. That will anneal the weld area and change the grain structure.

Do you know what the hardness rating of the 10" oilfield valve plates are?

That sounds like a good target! If they are free or cheap? They are easy access and replaceable! Cant beat that!

I'm not sure I'd shoot the bronze bullets at 'em. I was thinking for guests and my dad, to keep them entertained. Set 'em up at varying distances, and move 'em every now and then.

I'm not sure of the hardness..... you can mark 'em with a center punch for drilling, but it's nothing like punching a dot in mild steel! The sparks from a grinder are long and arrow pointed... ... I haven't hit one with a bead or a torch, as of yet. They handle several thousand PSI in the oilfield. Cheap is pretty cheap. I've been diggin 'em out of the scrap bin at my cousin's work when I can. I've got close to a dozen, so far, varying sizes. I shot one with several rounds, and it barely knocked the paint off!! I've been going to shoot one with some AP . 224 ammo, but the horses were in the way, at an incidental angle, so I didn't do it, and now they've knocked it off the post I had it tied to. Not enough hours in the day... . :sigh:

I'll be up to Breckenridge in April. SIL is getting married at the ski resort. If I can find the time, I'll look you up.

Breck is NICE! Been there many times! Hope to see you, if you can find the time!

Sparks on AR-500 will have star bursts. You cant cut it clean with an oxy-acetylene torch. Plasma, no problem.

Coalsmoke used to install the AR-500 stuff on excavator buckets when he had his welding rig. He would order the stuff, pre bent to fit. Mild steel, on the other hand is very workable, heated with a rose bud.
