question on how to truck pull

This is my first truck and first diesel.

I assumed all diesel engines are direct injection. Am I wrong? What ones are DI and what are the other types? I know that Detroit Diesel has 2 stroke diesels...

Thanks for the info.

I think there are two basic types, direct injection ( fuel injected directly into the combustion chamber ) and pre-chamber injection ( fuel injected into a small prechamber ). The pre-chamber types ( VW Rabbit vintage ) use the dreaded glow plugs. However, my VW Rabbit would start dependably down to -24F. There are other variations such as two cycle and several others.

Caterpillar made the 1674 diesel (6 cyl) for 18 wheelers back in the 70's-80's with the pre-combustion chamber.

Boy did THAT engine clatter and rattle at an idle! Pulled like a bear though- beat out the Cummins of those days.

All diesel that I know of are DI meaning the fuel is injected into combustion chamber(precombustion camber or top of piston) Gasser have wet intakes (injected into the intake manifold) although there are some DI gasser also.

... and I dont believe Detroit has made a 2-stroke motor for a bunch of years... the Series 60 motor was introduced in the mid/late 80's. It is a 4valve motor with twin overhead cams (ala BMW!)and electronic engine managment... thank you Roger Penske for turning the diesel truck world on its ear!
