I just happened across this story. (read down to the part where it talks about Audie Murphy and John Paul Jones)

I dont know who may have written this story, but I can't believe that he was born in the US. Could it be that many or most people in the US today do not know about Audie Murphy ? Or John Paul Jones ? Unless I misread the story, that is what the author is saying.

If what he is implying, it is a sad day indeed.

TRat,

Sadly, what you say is true. Listen to similar web posts and they seem to come from the same uninformed, uneducated group. Could it be the revisionist history now taught in our schools? I think so. There are several new attorneys where I work (30ish in age). One day we were talking and the subject touched on Viet Nam. I was floored when they said they have heard the name Viet Nam mentioned briefly in their early education, but knew nothing about the history or our involvement in Viet Nam. Armistice Day, or Veterans Day is just another holiday to them. From their attitudes, it would not surprise me if their Thank You's are empty ones; just given for the “feel good” ride. Moreover, they profess extreme liberalism. Oh, did I mention, darn few of them can spell. We have a number of Vietnamese individuals in our IT division who, upon learning that an employee is a Viet Nam era veteran, will come up to them and thank them personally for their sacrifices. These folks are so humble and thankful for our efforts, and I consider them great friends. And, to think just 25 to 35 years ago they couldn't speak much English, if any at all; and yet today they speak very well and spell 100 times better than many of our home grown attorneys.

What you say is absolutely true. But my point was that Audie Murphy and Jone Paul Jones are not unsong heros. At least until a few years ago, Jone Paul Jones has been known to every American above the age of 5. And his "I have not yet begun to fignt" has been well know to everyone as well. And those who couldn't name his and the British ship would at least recognize theirs names when heard. And Audie Murphy. He became a movie star for crying out loud. Not because he was discovered pumping gas in Peoria, but because of his notoriety. Heck, they made a very famous movie (To Hell and Back) STARING Audie Murphy about his WWII exploits.

TRat,

TRat,

I understood your point well. I was watching an Audie Murphy western as I was typing. All of the history and pride that you and I grew up with has been displaced with "we were BAD", let's apologize, and don't teach all those evil things we did in the world... and heroes like. . uh, well... (trying my best to keep my breakfast down)... Lady Gaga; or is it gag-gag? Where are today's heroes? Is it Obama and his party of loons, who is taking us away from the evils of capitalism and granting our every "Maslow need"; or, Oprah for giving us one-sided equality; or, any number of Hollywierd stars with little or no social redeeming value; or, a bunch of bouncing buffoons that can't articulate the English language; or, Che... i'm sorry, I just can't come up with many that move the whole me, only those that move my intestinal bits in reverse. Yeppers, America has been dumbed down. And it happened in the blink of an eye. Today's society is too concerned about not offending or killing their fellow man, (eek!!! You ate that pop-tart and made it look like a weapon! My starched, lace undies are now saturated in a warm yellow fluid; you evil doer, you!), yet promote the full range of abortions on our dime.

I am reading a book by Geoffrey C. Ward and Ken Burns on WWII; this is one of the PBS books that they sell. The book is called “The War” it was written in 2007 by them and one of the reason they state was that the younger generation was of the opinion and I quote “ It seems that an unacceptably large number of graduating high-school seniors think we fought WITH the Germans AGAINST the Russians in the Second World War”. Unfortunately I find that this is becoming more and more true every day do to the education system in place today.

Well I came across a very drunk John Paul Jones in Bozeman MT. He damaged my Bronco and spent the night in jail.

Right, and there's a John Paul Jones who's a kinda famous musician from England. ????

I think we need to do an age roll call here. I'm not diluting any history, but I am questioning the "popularity" of it. I'm likely the youngest one who's gonna participate in this thread (almost 46). I know briefly who the JPJ in question was. I have no idea who Audie was until I read this. I don't think I'm a dumb American.
History is a grand thing. It's so huge that people dedicate their lives in studying it. I'm very fortunate to have a son who is very much interested in history, and in fact on occasion, when it comes to certain parts of American history and geography, the teacher has to yielded the class to him. He's 13. Ask him who fought in the battles of Monmouth and Long island during the revolution, and he'll tell you all about his Great (times 7) Grandfather from his Mom's side.
Does anyone in this thread know where Fraunces tavern is, and what happened there? If ever you're in Manhattan, you'd be one of the "uneducated Americans" if you skip this place while in the city. It's NOT on the double decker tour bus route!

None of this was taught in school, and this is the problem. We ARE falling as a society and it's our own fault- as a whole. Only us who care can make a difference. Set an example. If you are a veteran, why not offer to talk at your local school? It may not be part of the curriculum, but if you have a Nam story, and the kids are studying that, you'd be an awesome asset and maybe even open some eyes.

We're forgetting out history- we'll be damned to repeat it. It IS happening. I think it was great that Yahoo let that story get published.

Wayne, at your age I almost wouldn't expect you to know who Audie Murphy was. The reason I was first aware of him was because of the movies (I'm 64 years old). It was after I learned about the actor that I found out that he was the most decorated American soldier in WWII, and I learned about his story. My point was that he is NOT an unsung hero. He was very much publicized as a WWII hero, and was a popular actor.

LOL, a founding member of one the most influential bands of 60's and 70's Led Zepplin. Lousy role model but another name from history. Not sure the name Led Zepplin is even known by a lot of people anymore.

Ronald Reagn was a politician, Roy Rogers a guy with a horse, Gene Autrey who? Murphy was in it up to his neck but I think Hollywood had more to do with publicizing that than anything. Many others were right there with him recognition or not. Autrey flew cargo planes in the Burma air lift, not a walk in the park by any means. More than a few in my home area survived d-day and\or were right there with Patton on his little trip across Europe. Several close neighbors survived Vietnam, some didn't. None of them talked about it to any great degree.

History as taught in our public education system has been replaced by a sanitized version of everything that was done wrong, individual achievements and sacrifices are edited out because it would define something more than a social-centric view. Not a matter of dumbing down, just a flat removal from public knowledge.

The point of the thread is that the author used examples of "unsung heros" who were not "unsung" at all. He should have used someone who was actually an "unsung" hero.

I wouldn't touch answering this with one of my thoughts with a 100ft pole wearing a flame retardant suit submersed in water!! :-laf but it is funny!!

...but they all know who Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Drake, "K-Fed", and Lil Wayne are.

Some of my local high school kids think the US fought Great Britain in WW2.......sad but true.

Right. I was really scratching my head on this one. I thought I knew the name, but on the scale of, like Roy Rogers. This is also part of the issue, Any war hero we might have today will be cast aside as a bad man, or struck by tragedy. One example I know of. Chris Kyle, the USN sniper seemed to be getting into the public life by appearing in magazines, doing charity work doing interviews. All of a sudden- poof- he was killed by another veteran suffering from PTSD. This guy could have been the one to turn things around.

US uneducated? We voted Obama into office - - - AGAIN!

To loosely quote Tonto: "What do you mean we Ke-mo sah-bee?" No way, no how!

But unfortunately you and I were the minority in this according to Obama and his cronies!

If this is the case, then maybe a bit of "minority" rights and considerations are due. Like, say, um, how about quadruple voting points to offset illegal’s', dead, and otherwise unquestioned questionable votes accepted by the liberals.

There are increasing numbers of obama voters who are becoming disillusioned at their messiah and the ACA. Looks like the wheels on the ACA train are experiencing symptoms of the infamous Death Wobble. (please, please, pretty please)
