Are EGR free engines in our future?

I've read in a few places Cummins has some EGR free engines that meets EURO V emissions. They now have a B-series engine that uses this technology. It is basically after treatment only. I believe they are only industrial engines at this point. I think IVECO has an OTR engines that is similar. I know EURO and EPA standards are a little different, especially with regard to NO2, so it may not be possible to meet EPA standards with this technology. But it sure would be nice of we could buy a truck off the lot without the EGR and properly tuned. I could put up with some crap in the exhaust at current performance levels.

I believe I had read that Case IH was no longer using EGR at least on certain sizes, which would be IVECO engines.

I'm not sure that we will see EGR less engines at this point if the new X series is any indicator. The X series replaced the ISX platform and incorporates a single module after treatment system, new def doser and mixer design. The exhaust mounted fuel injector is gone. The combined system is touted to significantly cut back on regens and improve efficiency. The X series is federal Phase 1 greenhouse-gas (GHG) compliant so I'd expect this tech to trickle down to the next gen 6.7.

They've dialed back on EGR when SCR came (one reason they SCR engines get better fuel mileage) SCR and NOX management is constantly improving along with injection quality. Yes I think EGR can go away, but the GHG game causes other problems like fuel efficiency goals.

I was looking at Case IH web site today and the current 4.5/6.7 tractor platform has SCR/DOC and something called "clean up catalyst". No egr or dpf. Hummmm...... The cut away photo of the 6.7 also has a (rear) gear driven overhead cam. Interesting. Kinda excited about what might be coming for the first time a while. 900ft/lbs, no egr. overhead cam, that sounds very cool.

Iveco has patented technology for their SCR technology. They don't use any external EGR. No EGR coolers, no EGR valves and no VGT turbos. More fuel efficient and reliable path to meet emissions. It does use more DEF than other SCR systems.

Great, a 31 gal DEF tank and a 5 gal Diesel tank. And I already hate the 31 gal diesel tank. SnoKing

I'll take more def over egr any day. I am guessing (key word here) that the Iveco, FPT (CaseIH engines) and the new Euro 5 Cummins all use the same or very similar technology. The CaseIH site is my only source thus far as to what it looks like (SCR,CUC(clean up catalyst), no egr or dpf). Time will tell, but at least it looks like something to look forward to as opposed to avoid, delete. If our future holds a near 500hp 6.7 with no egr, anything close to proper timing, all after treatment engines, then the future is good.

The 5.0 has EGR. see that huge cooler up top? What makes you say it's especially clean?

The information I've read and seen claim
that it is the cleanest diesel ever, so that is my question, WHAT?, not that "I" said it was the cleanest, and yes I can see higher PSI in the fuel department. Adding to is refinement. (I guess)
