I believe that is in reference to what comes out the pipe, Cummins touts the 5.0 as being "near zero emissions", whatever that means. I know I've seen the GHG sticker on them so I'd guess it's got something to do with that.

I've been to Mack school recently, and one of the features on the '17 GHG engine is a particulate sensor. This looks like a nox or o2 sensor that's in the tip of the stack, and it's doing what it's called, Looking for particulate matter leaving the stack in case of a failed DPF or similar. More tightening.

Fyi, Cummins has already used those, starting 2013 i think, and subsequently has also eliminated them again at this point due to having to many issues with them. Detroit diesel also has used them and looks to be eliminating them again also. They are a sensor which looked for soot particles after all the aftreatment. In fact Cummins is eliminating them from a lot of units that had them installed already, and it was eliminated on our trucks as well during the recent SCR recall many of us had.

Mentioned this topic over on the RAM 1500 Ecodiesel forum on a discussion about tunes in Commifornia. Someone posted he had heard Cummins was denied certification for non-egr engines on the road. Stated EPA said must have EGR regardless of tailpipe emissions. That'd be the dumbest thing I've ever heard but it is government. Anyone heard anything to this effect?

EPA does not regulate technology, they regulate tailpipe emissions. If somebody had a straight motor that met emissions requirements without egr, so be it.

Never saw a particulate sensor, or any other sensor in the stack of a big rig, Cummins or Detroit powered. What was eliminated was a ammonia sensor, I believe. saw this with Cummins big rigs, and heard same for Dodge CTDs. Not sure what DDC has done.

I can't speak for Cummins or Detroit current or recent production. If you read my post, I was referring to the Mack/ Volvo GHG '17 exhaust aftertreatment system. It uses a Particulate sensor- this is not a NOx or ammonia sensor. They're monitoring for a breached DPF.
