Are injectors different between Intercooled or non intercooled

I'm new to the first gens and I am rebuilding one currently but while in my serch for injectors I have seen them listed differently for intercooled on non intercooled and was wondering if anyone knew the difference between the two and if it matters which I use?

Seth,

Non-intercooled trucks are runing 9mm injector tips and the intercooled trucks are running 7mm injector tips. Hope this helps.

fredflintstone, from what I have read in various threads the early model engines pre 91. 5 non intercooled run the larger diameter 9mm injectors so you could not install early injectors into a late model post 91. 5 or viseversa like a 1/2 " bolt into a 1/4" nut.

The 9mm tips flow more fuel than the 7mm. If I remember correctly, there has been some guys on the TDR that swapped their stock 9mm injecotrs for Power Wagon injectors and lost power.

Yup that's how I understood it too. More fuel. Also the (for lack of better words) the barrel that holds the injector in was larger. So, to change between model years you have to use an adapter from 9-7mm.

Lucas Injectors

Seth,



I would consider buying a set of Lucas (aka Princess of Darkness) injectors. I think these are the only injectors that flow better than the stock injectors for a pre-1991. 5, nonintercooled truck. They are 7 mm tips, but you can put a spacer (Cummins made) in to make up the 2 mm difference. Big Don is running a set of POD injectors and is making some serious 1st gen horsepower. However, if you do run these bigger injecotrs, you really ought to intercool the old gal to help keep the EGT down. A set of POD injectors can be bought for about $440 from Piers. Also check with Big Don about a price. Hope this helps.

The PODs injectors from Piers are the way to go, but first you better have a intercooler and a EGT gauge BEFORE you upgrade the injectors. Without these items a set of PODs could melt down your Cummins real fast. I have a set PODs with a Banks intercooler and a couple other upgrades and I had to turn DOWN my injection pump to keep from shreading the rear tires. (I can light up the tires in 4th gear by flooring it with the pump set a little above stock) . At Thunder at Muncie Dino, the Crew Cab put out at the wheels 210hp and 690 ft lbs of torque (with a turned down pump and the Cummins not fully warmed up). I was later told that the dino was running about %20 light on its readings.

OK, how about some opinions? I understand the general relationship between more fuel, EGT, and intercooling.

Currently with my non-intercooled 91, my EGT (pre-turbo) rarely goes over 900, and only goes over 1000 if I go on a "bonsai" run.

I would like to consider an injector upgrade in the future and I'm not sure I want to add an intercooler.

What sort of increase in EGT might I expect? Anybody have any data?

EGT increases are all relative. It will depend on your fuel settings, load etc. etc..... in my case without any changes I saw about 250*F increase, if I remember right... I also saw them go up faster... alot faster.

Keep in mind that when you make the change you can ease up on the pump since the nozzles do more work for you. If you ease up on fueling you reduce EGT's.

Also remember that if you ever get a serious load on that truck and you work it hard, those temps will shoot up pretty good, especially with no intercooler...

1250*F - good all day long

1300*F - good for 1 minute out of 5

1500*F - good for a Chernyobl demo ... ... which is not good.
