Are Michelins That Good???

In this months TDR magazine [million mile truck article] One item stuck out on the maintenance records. Getting 200,000 miles from a set of Michelin 215/85R-16E tires? I'll need a set soon. What do these tires cost?

The Michelins I have on my 2001 have been excellent. At 62,000 miles, I estimate they have another 40K left in them. They are wearing much better than the Goodyears I had on my '98. 5. Those were finished at 50K. I'll be very happy with 100K out of my Michelin 265's on my 2500.

I don't think they are that good. My truck (see sig. ) has 36K miles on it and I recently had the tread depth measured. I have around 60 - 70% left. That means if I really run them down (which I won't) I should get 80K out of them. Now that is real good but 200K, Towing all of the time??? I don't think so. But I have been wrong before, just ask my wife



One possible answer. I have LTX M/S 235/85/16E's on my truck. They may be using a Commerial grade Michelin which then would make 200K quite possible. I think they are called Michelin XPS? I have compared them to the LTX M/S's and they are much heavier. They felt like they weighed half again as much as the LTX's.

If you want to get lots of miles out of any tire keep it at a steady speed for hours on end. Drive 150K - 200K per year at 55 - 60mph with reasonable loads. That is how you get 100K on a set of tire. Duellys do it easier as most of the wear is on the rears.



Now with lots of short trips, in town, lots of stop and go traffic, heavy foot OOORRRR. pulling extreme loads at very high speeds and gravel will eat a set of the best commercial tires in 30K. Including Michellin XPS's.



The same goes for brake pads. Some of us get 100K out of them and some have a hard time getting 30K. It is not the truck or the tires or the brakes..... it is how we use them.

I agree wwith ND. I can't get over 40,000 with my Michelins. I tow heavy and go 65 to 75 mph most of the time. I always run the correct press's and rotate every 5 to 6 thousand miles. I do like them tho. I will consider the HD tires and rims I see in the mag.

One of my factory LTX's blew up on the highway after 24,000 miles (I think a sidewall was cut by driving on a gravel road). Only half the tread was left, so I replaced 'em with Les Schwab TXR's. Michelins are now off the list (so are Goodyear Wranglers, but that's another story)

My first set of Michelins went 103,000 the present set is at 108,000 and they are about to be replaced. . I can't complain!

i to have a set of michelins and i was wondering what tire pressure everyone is running in their tires to get that high of milage out of them. mine are wearing really well as i have 30k on them and they still look brand new but there seems to be alot of tire roll on the front. thanks

FWIW

I run about 75 PSI on my 3500. I know does make a little harder ride, but did the same with last dually and worked fine. Try to run outside dual about 3-4 PSI lower than inside dual. Rotated last time at 8,000 miles. Would have rotated sooner but was on long vacation trip to the upper north and then to the far west before heading back to the deep south.

I run 65#'s in the fronts and 50# in the rears. I run unloaded 95% of the time. Based on my dusty road tread test, it has perfect tread contact, no side wall roll.

I've got the 235's, Michelin X Radial LT & run the recommended pressure. They are wearing evenly & I'm @ 30k miles & on the treadbars.

Bought my truck w-30k on the speedo. I rotated

with 35k first time I expect.

Michelin LTX 215/85/16, should do at least 75k to 100k... . of course I liked the Wanglers on my first truck, but they were shot at 40k.

Have the OEM Michelin LTX M/S 215/85/16 E rated. Presently have 70K on all six. Should exceed 100K before they need replacement. No tire, on any vehicle I've owned, has lasted this long.

My truck came with the 245's. They lasted 65K miles. I was happy enough with them to get another set on Michelins, but this time I got the 265's. The old worn out 245's were still pretty decent in the rain when I replaced them.

I had the new ones rotated tonight. I have 15K miles on them and they still look pretty dam good.

I'm either getting Michelins again next time, or the 19. 5's. The only thing keeping me from the 19. 5's is the cost.

My truck came with LTX 265/75/16. Thay seem to be good on asfault, but dont take them off road . I cut one sidewall, another got poked with a twigg, and the third was lost to a screw on the edge of the tread and sidewall . I am now looking at goodyear MT/R (Durawall). Any other suggestions.
