Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Good Pusher Pump

I just put on a HTBG, with a 4" down pipe and 4" exhaust back to the Magna Flow muffler, that I already ahd on there. I also put on an AFE system. My truck is so much louder in the cab... I mean I can hear that whistle big time now. And when I step on it. . it really whistles. I don't mind it, my wife hates it, but is that normal?? I have a Carter pusher pump I will be installing soon as well because with my Comp on 3x5 I noitce it drop all the way down to 4psi on the FP gauge before it shifts. I didn't notice it being that bad before the turbo. I also notice that my EGT's seem HIGHER as well. What gives?? I haven't turned it up past 3x5 yet as I want to give the turbo some time to break in. . but honestly can't say it feels much stronger/faster. Obviously I haven't stood on it very long but want to make sure this is all "normal".

I've heard that the outerwear cover for your AFE will cut the whistle volume down, perhaps that will help your misses get used to it. :D

I was reading about the silencer ring. I didn't take that out from the stock turbo and put it in the new one. Will it fit?? If so... it's on tomorrow... it really is loud! And waht about the raised EGT's??

I'm pretty sure the silencer ring won't fit, since they're two different brands of turbos.

Bigger turbos will raise egt's in the low-mid rpm range. It's a trade-off; bottom for top.

You really won't feel much from a turbo. There's some gain because of the lower exhaust backpressure, but that's going to be minimal. With a diesel engine, fuel=power and air=cooling (egt's). Your egts are now cooler on the top, which allows you to add more fuel to get more power.

EGT's were higher at low-mid range on a small hill. At about 50-55mph I noticed them at 1220 on 3x5. Although... I do think they were cooler on top end. I'll call HTT and see if the silencer ring will work off the stock turbo.

What were the conditions when you got the 1220? Towing/empty? How much throttle? How much boost?

he said 50-55MPH so that would be like 1600-1700 RPMs. that's border line lugging it for a stocker and with the bigger turbo you ARE lugging it. you need to carry more RPM's onto the hill and it will cool down some. downshift or speed up, my friend!

BTW, put twins on it and there is nearly no whistle until you hit 25PSI or so. my wife loves it. we can actually converse now while towing :D

HTT said they don't make a slincer ring for it and the stock one won't fit. Anyone know of somebody that makes a silencer ring for it?? Would it make sense that my fuel pressure dropped some with the bigger turbo?? I haven't put the pusher pump on yet.

If that turbo is an hx40 compressor housing it can be machined for a silencer ring, my dodgezilla has one .

My first turbo was no silencer ring and the turbo whistle pitch would give me a headache :(

It is based off a Swhwitzer(sp?) 300. . similar to the BD super B. Know where to get a silencer ring made. . or where to buy one??

I don't know that you could effectively put a silencer ring on that turbo. If so I would have thought HTT would have been able to do it for you.

Leave it to the wives to put the kibosh on anything man finds fun or entertaining... ... . :{ .....

Flame suit on, running other direction... ..... :-laf

i find when I'm driving with my co-pilot its best to keep the pedal touch light!!

But I have forgotten from time to time:eek: - and the turbo's "music" can sometimes drown out that "extra noise" goin on inside the cab... ... ... . :-laf :-laf :-laf :-laf .

LOL... gueess she'll have to learn to live with it. What about the fuel pressure thing?? Also, I swear it seem slower and smokes more. There's no way I could have screwed it up putting it on, right?

More like you'd like her to live with it!! LOL guess again!!!:{ :{ - must be something with that high pitched whistle the turbos make that is extremely sensitive to the female sensory system... ...

Probally seems slower because you're gonna have to spool it up real good after you put some miles on it- then lay into it ( this is better achieved when driving solo- trust me..... ) L O L !!

Check for any leaks in the plumbing to and from the intercooler... .

Did you hook up fuel pump yet?

The inercooler lines all look good... I have checked them several times. Yeah, I haven't really layed into it yet... . got on it a little in 3x5 but let out real quick... big cloud of smoke!! Haven't put the fuel pump on yet... friend is going to help me this weekend. I wasn't sure how to do it and I didn't want to tear into it and be stuck. Because of that I really haven't turned up the box past 3. How long do I need to wait until I can lay into it? I'm listening this time RacinDuallie... I don't want another blow up like I had last time for not listening!!;) :)

I don't want this to sound like I'm telling you how to drive or anything I am merely suggesting... . I hope your not laying into the throttle hard and then lifting foot comepletely off pedal? That can shock the turbo shaft as well:eek: . Repeated use like this can also harm your turbo:{ - again I'm not telling you- it's just not how the turbo likes to live:D ..... what's happening inside your plumbing is when you lift your foot off qwickly like that the air could force the impellers to stop dead and change direction and then back again to normal rotation... ... . shaft snapping forces in effect here- might not be too much to worry about with your turbo you selected- I don't know:confused: - but some of the HX's snap when used like this..... :D

How far up in the boost do you get to before 'the cloud thins' ?

Or is it one big cloud from launch and that's it?

My HX-40 used to bomb a cloud all the way down the track:-laf  :-laf

Usually it is one big cloud and then lets off... although I can still see some exhuast. If I lay into it on the freeway it smokes... and I see the exhuast ever so slightly as long as I am into it. As far as my driving habits. . so far I have been laying into it lightly and letting out of it lightly. I haven't mashed it yet... . how much longer until I can?? What about the fuel pressure?
