Aaaarrrrgggggghhhhhh!!! I saw RankRam's picture and had U-joint stuck in my mind, so much so that I completely ignored what I was reading in everyone's words. I very thoroughly inspected the U-joints going to the front wheels and yep, no hole because thar ain't none thar.

Thanks to Prairie Dog I looked for the sticker under the hood and DOH!!! There was this nice sticker telling me to lube the "Front Driveshaft" you idiot and a nice picture pointing to the Double Cardan joint. Crawled back under with my handy dandy inspection mirror and flashlight and there she was.

A picture may be worth a thousand words but in my case I should have listened to the words and ignored the picture.

So ignore my previous post, below is where it really is.

Congrats on finding the fitting, and for including the Cardan joint picture. It took several tries before I found mine and I even knew pretty much where to look. I'm sure there are still many dealer techs who will say there is no fitting. They are wrong!!! and will have to be led by the hand before they see the light.

The first time I went to grease the fitting it took me what seemed like hours on the ground and I had like three other people look and they didn't believe it was there. The next day I put it on a rack at my dad's wrecking yard and it still took forever for me to finally find it. Then greasing it is almost as much of a pain.

Thats correct, only the outside tie rods have a fitting for some reason.

Also, the earliest third gens dont have the greasealbe front u-joints.

I dont know when they started but if you dont have the sticker under the hood than you cant grease them.

I have an early 06. I have not been able to find this fitting. Where will I find the sticker under the hood if I need to grease the joint?

Carl

Mine is also an earlier '06. The sticker is on the cross brace in front of the radiator, drivers side. It's presence should mean the fitting is there. It's absence may mean the guy at the factory missed one. I for one would want to make sure for myself.

Confused

I’m not sure what to think now. I crawled under my 2006 and could not find the fitting. I got on the phone with the dealer I bought the truck from and talked to the service manager. I again crawled under the truck with phone in hand and service manager on phone. He said “it was not really a grease fitting, but a rubber collar between the two u-joints”. He then directed me to take the needle grease gun and put a small amount of grease under the rubber collar. I did just that. Are you guys that found the mystery fitting actually finding a fitting of some kind? I now have no idea what I greased.

Thanks. Jeff.

I'll try to describe it.

There is a small machined area in the center portion of the Cardan joint. Some have described it as rubber. The photos are not really too clear and it is tough to see. In the middle of that area is what looks like a small metal disc, slightly shinier than the rest and probably 1/8" or so in diameter. If you press on the disc with a tool like an awl or the lube needle, you will see that it is actually spring loaded. That is the fitting. By pressing the needle against the disc, the grease is pumped past it into the cavity behind.

Older Cardan joints lack the fitting, being called "lifetime lubed". One on my '88 Ford Bronco lasted about 90K miles. When it went out it started chirping as it rotated, telling me it needed replacement.

I hope this is of some help.

I wrestled with this thing on my '05 a couple of times and learned from a previous post to lift the edge of the rubber dust boot and inject the grease there. It is much easier than re-finding the fitting every time.

Here is the pic again, happy hunting! :D

Remove the Skid Plate.

Lift the left front tire.

Rotate the tire until the recessed hole or fitting appears.

Use grease needle (Napa part# 715-1200)

You will know it has been greased properly when grease comes out the center of the CV joint on the T-case side.

Good Luck

Actually they do a great job and are a 5 star service dealer. I get a receipt showing I paid them for the grease job. If they don't do it and something breaks down, I have receipts to prove that they greased in case DC ever says it is my fault.

^^^^- my local dealer is a 5-star- hope I receive the same level of service

I'm a newbie 1st post 1st thread

Not There

I gave up trying to find the fitting. I finally went down to the local service department and asked them to show me the fitting. To my surprise the service manager told me that some of the trucks had a sealed unit hence no fitting. He could not give me a serial number series that don't have the fitting. My definitely does not have one. They had a truck in a couple of weeks before I took mine in and couldn't find the fitting. In checking with the Dodge engineers they found that some of the trucks didn't have them. So if you can't find one on yours after a couple of hours of searching you probably don't have one either.
