I pulled the #1 injector today to find TDC. The thing was filthy, I brushed it with a brass brush and upon CLOSE examination I don't see the hole(s) for the juice to get out. I know there are some and they are after the copper gasket... durned if I see um. Yes, my eyes are not what they used to be but I figured they would be obvious.

Also upon putting the injector back I bled it till things smoothed out, then I thought why not check the others... . with each injector bled the CTD seemed smoother... little bubbles on some upon loosening... . hummm? Normal?

How good did you say your eyes were again. :)

Just kidding. You should be able to see the holes with the naked eye. They are on the tip of the injector where the shaft shrinks in size before the nipple on the end. Make sense?

There should be 5 of them. My best guess on the size of the hole would be . 002" - . 004". Very small, but easily visible.

You might have just brushed some carbon over into the holes before you started looking at them.

Thanks for the info Joe. We pulled Cord's head the day before the dyno run and started talking about injector holes and sizes and wanted to compare orifice sizes with the original 160 injectors.

Cord laughed at me, but I pulled out my calipers and set them to . 004" and then compared the gap to the hole. I knew the hole was bigger than . 002 and less than . 015. :)

Obviously you have a slightly better method than me. :)

Thanks again for the info.

thanks Joe

Joe, Thats some good info, upon getting the magnifieing glass out I see um. So many years of Tig and close tolerance work has made glasses a must and often magnifieing glasses a must... someday laser surgery will be needed.

bighammer - you will have to be more specific. Not all hair is the same diameter. Typically, black hair is larger in diameter than blond hair. Red hair can be larger or smaller in diameter.

It is also worth pointing out it makes a difference which place on the body you are getting this hair from.

Wayne

So what you are saying is that a 180hp injector might have holes the size of blonde hair, 215s the size of black hair, and 370s are like big fat black pubic hairs? :D

Any word on the nozzle hole size for the 370's?

bighammer has a good analogy going... but we're still lacking the actual nozzle hole size.

HAIR DIAMETER

In my studies of human hair diameter I have found they vary from one half of one thousanth to one and one half thousanth. But I have only checked 6 or so.

Seriously I had my caliper out 3 days ago measuring them. Then today I stumbled on this post.

So I guess you could call me an authority!!!!

Well i got a rought dimension for the 370 hole size. I will refine this better tonight but, the rought size is (drum roll please) about . 0145" to about . 0160". Those are some good size holes

It has been a few years since I have worked in the machinist trade, but I think it is worth mentioning the accuracy of calipers.

My experience has been that calipers (dial, venire [?] or digital, etc) have their limitations for accuracy. Typically, plus or minus . 001 to . 002 of an inch. This has to do with the design of the tool and the user.

They are great for quick reference and where extreme accuracy is not required. They are very easily out of calibration due to their design. Some folks are of the belief they replace the entire set of machinist measuring tools.

Now lets get serious.

Berrigan - You did not specify if color had anything to do with difference in diameter, or possibly the measuring tool. I would be more reassured if you used micrometers (or an optical device) for the measurements. LOL

bighammer - Judging by the smoke from my 370's, you would think the holes were the size of the pubic area. LOL

Bill Lins - To my knowledge, there has not been a standard established on TDR. illflem is more active on the TDR than most of us, so maybe he knows the standard. LOL

JohnE - Thus far, I don't think we have enough info to split hairs. We are still trying to establish location of hair, color and measuring device. LOL
