If I understand correctly, a republic is a representive form of government. In a republic the
people have certain rights that the government is not allowed to take away. If I have this wrong,
please correct me. I was "educated" in a government school.
According to the Constitution, we are a republic. It seems to me that our government today
bears no resemblence to what the Constitution outlines as the duties and limits of the government.
Just looking at the Bill of Rights, I can't seem to find one that has not been violated by our
present government.
I think a better description of our current for of government would be a democratic socialism.
Democratic, since we elect our representivites, and they vote for the laws. They are not
prohibited from passing laws violating our human rights, in fact our human rights are able to be
voted and and repealed anytime that the congress can get a majority vote. Socialism describes
an economic system. Socialism seeks "fairness" (from each according to his ability, to each
according to his need). Under socialism, the government is required to take care of the people.
It will provide for the necessities such as food (food stamps), housing (rent control), medical care
(medicare and medicade) and other basic necessities (welfare in general). Social(ist) security
also is designed to provide for people's retirement.
Democracy is not something we should be striving towards. I once heard it described as two
wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner. As soon as another party gains control,
they get to use the power of the government to do as they will. All they need is a majority of the
senators and representatives to agree. Socialism has failed as an economic system around the
world. When other governments haved accepted this, and started moving (somewhat) towards a
capatalistic economy, their economy has improved.
What do we need to do to return our country to a republic? I don't know. We would have to
change the attitude of the people in the country. Too many people seem to think that they should
be given money simply because they live here. This is not limited to the poor in this country but
also the middle class. Socialist security has failed, but those collecting or who are near do not
seem to want the system changed. The people who are living in nursing homes have the
government picking up the cost of their stay. I can't see the country changing until this socialist
mentality changes. The only other option is watering the Tree of Liberty.
