Are you using an injector cleaner in your fuel?

Wondering if anyone is using anything to keep the injectors, pump, etc clean. If so, what is it & where do you get it?

Thanks

most of the diesel owners i know use ;stanadyne' fuel system cleaner. i've used it for a long time and like what it does.

dirty?

... ... you would think that if the fuel is moving at 3000+psi it would not have much of a chance of gumming up those injectors... ... .

... ... just a random thought... . james:confused:

I use the Stanadyne in the Blue bottle. Get it from a local pump/turbo shop. Occasionally I put in some of the Cummins injector cleaner. Get it from the local Cummins South.

I've been using Howes products every tank (approx 8oz. per 25gal. fill).

I tried a couple of bottles of Power Service, but went back to Howes 'cuz the pump seems to run a little quieter with it.

I have used Stanadyne from day one , have never missed, and am happy to report that I just swapped injectors at 21 k and the originals were clean as a whistle, that sold me on it, I also feal the extra lubricity to the vp-44 is instrumental , plus the centane improver will increase your milage enough to justify alone IMHO Kevin

I'm currently using Stanadyne Performance Formula (works good). Prior to that I was using Amsoil Diesel Fuel Concentrate (worked good too). Prior to that I used Red Line 85+ (that also worked good). What the heck, life is good. All three fuel additives raise cetane, clean and lubricate the entire injection/fuel system and lower the pour point.

I use 8 oz of Howes meaner cleaner every 3rd tank of fuel. It seems to smoke less on that tank of fuel but thats about all I can tell you.

Great!

Thanks for the replies. :) I've heard Stanadyne mentioned here on the worlds greatest web site, but this is the 1st time I've heard of Powerservice. I was just @ the WalMart & did a quick once over of the shelves & nothing stood out, but I'm going back after it now!

One of the local shops had a # of diesel additives. They recommended that when you change filters, fill the filter with the cleaner instead of diesel & then start it back up. That 'pure' shot they claim is good at those intervals. Kind of worries me though with 100% cleaner going thru the pump. I guess it's only going thru @ 'cranking' rpm. Heard of this type of cleaning?

I've used Red Line 85+ and Cummins cleaner mostly, but have also used some STP diesel additive and some POwerService as well.

I made my choices based on the great article in the print version of TDR from issue 31 or 32 if I remember correctly.

My truck has 28800 miles as of today, and even with all the BOMBing I've done, my fuel system is still 100% stock. No problems yet :)

Since you have the P-pump

Forrest, since you're a 12-valver and have the rugged oil-lubed inline injection pump, additives for fuel lube are not that critical or essential, so just something occasionally to clean injectors is probably all you really need.

Hey Vaughn!

Thanks! I recall back to the fuel injected gasoline motors & had performance & economy problems, only to find that that perfect conical spray pattern wasn't there anymore! :( I don't know if that's an issue with us, but a lack of fuel would definately be a problem!

From the Chevron Diesel website,

"Aftermarket Additives: It would be convenient for the user if a finished diesel fuel could satisfy all his or her requirements without the use of supplemental additives. Although this is most often the case, some users must use additives because the low temperature conditions in their region are more severe than those for which the fuel was designed. Other users feel that they need a higher quality diesel than regular diesel. A large number of aftermarket additive products are available to meet these real or perceived needs. Some are aggressively marketed with testimonials and bold performance claims that seem "too good to be true. " So, as with any purchase, it is wise to remember the advice, caveat emptor – let the buyer beware. "

I only use Howe's in the winter for it's anti-gel properties since I run straight #2 year round. With millions of combined miles on many different types of diesel engines without problems I can see no reason to do otherwise. Of course I don't own a 24 valve nor would I.

Forrest, Power Service comes in almost gallon size as well as quart size, they are in white plastic containers with black and red writing on them (if memory serves). They will be located near the engine oil and fuel system additives.

Regarding your remark about conical spray pattern being important to the Diesel engine or not, in a word, ABSOLUTELY! If you have anything less than an optimal spray pattern you are losing power and fuel mileage.

Fuel additives

Since I can buy dierect from Amsoil and have products shipped directly to my home, I use the Amsoil Diesel Fuel Concentrate at the rate of 4 oz. per 25 gallon, which turns out to about $1. 25 per dose. I do not use it every tankful however, just every other tank. My truck of course has the P7100 pump. I do beleive the VE44 pumps do need fuel additives to help lubricate them since they do not get it from the oil.

I use generic #2 diesel fuel, only additive is more #2 diesel fuel. :D No drugs, no additives, no conditioners, no hoses with compressed gas introduction. No problems, either, other than my usual low power complaint ;)

Joseph, if you would only believe the labels on the different additives maybe then you could add a gallon of each to every tank for an easy 800hp for Sickly;)
