Has anyone found a way around this? I have had my factory turbo off for 8,000 miles. Trouble free till today. Then the 299 code hit and she defueled . Truck is barely driveable.

I have the factory electronic wastegate actuator hanging off the frame rail plugged in like most everybody elses. I have tried clearing it with my OBD tool, but when it is finished erasing it says "codes remain" and it is still there. I have also tried unplugging it and cleaning the contacts with no luck.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Well, I jumped the gun a little early I think. :D Of all nights for this to happen, we had plans to spend the night out as a family. While out running I thought about it. The code that it set was a low boost code. Not the normal boost rationality code that gets set from the wastegate actuator... ... That made me think more along the lines of the boost signal that the ecm was seeing. That could only mean the TST or connections to the map sensor. So when I got home I took the connections loose at the TST and the plugs loose at the map sensor and gave them a spray of WD40. Problem solved! :D It has rained a lot today so hopefully it was just moisture.

Glad to hear you got it fixed, Lloyd. I would try some dielectric grease in the fittings, to keep more water out. I used it on mine, and haven't had any water problems, even after plowing through some deep water at speed.

yeh, that was one of my thoughts last night. I didn't get it fixed till after dark, so I will try to get somoe today while I am out running around

Mr Mills, pleasecheck my thread under "Changed turbo on a 610?"

I have been chasing this issue since I changed turbos. I also got a "boost fooler" and still got the 0299 code... OBD2 will not erase the code. The limp mode is a major pita! I now have a BDDL on the 60hp setting stacked with my juice on level 1... Have not seen the code in awhile, but have a road trip scheduled for Fri (LAS-LAX-LAS)

Cheers, Bill

P. S how did the code finally clear??? I had to restart my truck about 40 times to get it to clear...

code is still pending until it goes through enough key cycles to satisfy the computer that the problem no longer exists. However, the truck is no longer ini limp mode and is running great again. I think the problem was either a bad connection or moisture at my MAP sensor. Basically it was reading low boost as if the truck had a severe boost leak. The ECM's on these trucks are supposed to defuel if we have a boost leak or no boost to save the motor from high EGT's. In your case, it could be a bad connection at the plug or could be a bad map sensor. I sprayed my connector with wd40 inside and the problem went away.

I set a 299 today in the parking lot at work.

I have a theory as to why the people with aftermarket turbos are setting the 299's after reading this thread.

I am thinking that the ECM needs to see X amount of boost for a given RPM.

When my code was set I was over 2000rpm in the parking lot at work in 2nd gear. At that rate cruising the 15mph speed limit at works parking lot my boost was very low, probably 2 lbs or so. The ECM might say "hey my boost is way to low". The boost wouldnt be low if you had a stock turbo. But since we now run larger aftermarket units that take longer to spool-up or either ones that dont spool under certain conditions. This could compound the chances of throwing our trucks into limp because of low boost conditions.

Of course, with the engine cold the Bullydog will add no fuel and the TST not seeing enough boost will also add no fuel. So with even less fuel in basically a stock fuel mode your boost is now even lower hence setting you up for the right condition to set a code, high rpm no boost. . (moon and stars aline!).

Just thinking out loud... .

That wouldn't make sense, since boost is based on load/fueling at RPM not RPM alone. IE: if you're going down a hill at 2000RPM you could have 0 boost for miles and not throw a code.

Ok... I went out and tried to get my truck to come out of limp mode by doing the key on off and restarting the engine over and over.

Didn't work, or atleast I didnt get it to.

At last I remembered the BULLY DOG downloader is supposed to clear trouble codes.

Well, I plugged it in and VOILA! It cleared the 602, 299 and 336 that I had.

Truck is back to normal.

:D

Mr Williams, It literally has taken me 40 to 50 restart attempts to get my truck out of limp mode. This has always been while I was on a road trip and the CEL has come on with the 0299 and then the trucks defuels. I absolutely hate this protection that has been built into the 05. So here I am, on I 15 with LA traffic and I can only do 50 mph if I am lucky. Now I have to find a place to pull off to do the 50 restart thing whilst not having a cell phone talking mom in a mini van rear end me. This limp mode thing is dangerous! I guess the engineers think it necessary, but I hate it. I have had this code come up about 12 or 15 times with limp mode. Aaron at EDGE tried everything he knew but could not remedy this. As I have said before, I feel that the aftermarket has not fully cracked the 610's code... . My fault for bombing a new truck... I couldn't help it :) Especially after my rocking 2nd gen. :D

I now am the proud owner of the Bully Dog Power Pup and am ready to clear Mr. 0299 should it come up again. I also have a TST Powermax CR ready to install and see if that helps.

Cheers, Bill

some times the oil off of the afe type filters can clog up the map on these new trucks may want to look into that i've seen it a few times now.

I posted this on another thread, but thought I would share this here!

Ok Gents update.

I finally took my first road trip without getting the 0299 and CEL with the defueling. How nice! It was LAS-LAX-LAS.

There have been some changes made to my truck which may have made this possible.

First, after the discussions on the thread and further with ALEXWV, I ordered a TST Powermax CR to replace my EDGE Juice. I also figured that if I was going to do that, I would stack it with something. I thought about a EZ, but decided to go with a Bully Dog Power PUP due to the fact that it can CLEAR CODES too!. I got the BDPP, hooked it up and guess what? The 0299 code came up. The check engine light was not on, the truck was not in limp mode... At this point, I was wondering if the recurring nightmare of 0299 and limp mode could have been due to the fact that the code was not actually cleared out of the truck, thereby allowing the ECM to trigger 0299 and limp at 175 mile intervals... I kid you guys not, the CEL would come on and the truck would go into limp mode with 0299 code. Then I would go through the 40 restart deal to "clear the code". I think I didn't clear the code, but just got the truck out of limp mode.

I believe that the Bully Dog officially cleared the 0299 allowing me to drive 550 miles today with no problems!

In the mean time, some of you may remember my hate for the AFE stage 2 system that I sold to NAUIDVR1. I hated the system because of the god awful turbo whine with the ball bearing turbo... I sold it and put the stock snorkel on... Relief! ... But, I did like how the STAGE 2 handled EGT's and how it flowed... . I decided to compromise and Got a Cool Blue Hose and Turbo Air Guide 3.

It is an excellent compromise. The egt's are lower and my turbo spools instantaneously!. I do have good turbo whine, but only when spooling, which is the way I like it!

I drove without my trailer to day, but I got 15. 5 mpg. The best my truck has ever gotten. Now approaching 9,000 miles, maybe it is starting to loosen up... That mileage was running 78 mph... :-laf

Now, I have a brand new TST Powermax CR to install!

Thanks all!
