Boldt's Wagon- You've peaked my curiosity. Why would you go after the 98 12 valve? Is the 24 valve worse than 12v? Judging from your sig you do alot of BOMB'ing and I don't know that I'd be doing any (ok, minimal like EZ and gauges) so I wonder if that changes the equation... ...

Remember I'm new so please keep it simple cause I'm stupid

The 12 valve engine's torque curve and horsepower curve is stronger on the bottom end, producing better power in the lower rpm ranges. You could say it has more diesel-like behavior. I prefer that to high rpm power that requires downshifts more quickly when pulling heavy loads or grades.

Read the thread "Which year?" https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24938 The 97 and 98 12 valves appear to have had the least trouble overall with the whole truck in addition to the fuel pumps being the best of all Cummins to date. I personally think that you will have less trouble with the mechanical P7100 pump than with electronics of the 24 valves over a 20 year period. I have noticed that many 24 valve computer chip hop ups are now failing. The highest maintenance item for the 47RE automatic transmission are the electronics for the torque converter clutch, the OD clutch and the pressure governor.

It is hard to get a chunk of steel (fuel plate) to fail. The 12 valve also allows you to dial in some fine adjustments with the star wheel and other mechanical adjustments.

Cost of bombing a 12 valve is $300 for a fuel plate and up for other goodies. Both the 5 speed stick and automatic transmissions require upgrading for longevity (clutch/torque converter and fifth gear shaft/valve body) at comparable costs. Choice of transmission, 2500/3500, and 2x4 or 4x4 is a personal preference.

Bill Kondolay told me that the Allison transmission will not be the answer to a maidens prayer with bombed diesels. He said he has repaired many Allisons in his career.

I have not increased the HP beyond what I feel I need to pull my fifth wheel with acceptable performance in the mountains. Most of the modifications increase the usability, reliability and life of the truck. I have dynoed at 250 rear wheel HP. I feel that HP modifications over 300 HP will ultimately cost you more in parts breakage.

huh....?

I have noticed that many 24 valve computer chip hop ups are now failing.

Boldt's Wagon... .

I don't read all the posts on this BB, but I don't miss many in the 24V forum. I can't recall seeing more than a couple of posts stating that any of the boxes flat failed by themselves. I'm curious why you said this... .

OK, say I went with the 98 QC. How difficult is it to add packages aftermarket that it might or might not have? Such as plow, camper, etc?
