Let's face it, all this dragging each other around means nothing. Give me enough weight & the right gearing I could drag any pickup you want to hook up around all day with a 5 hp lawn mower engine, & it wouldn't even need to be a Cummins... :D

Ok, I'll go back to my hole!

Its great to know the CTD has the guts. However having said that I am one of those that has owned and kept for over 100,00 miles. a 1994 model with NV 4500, then 2001. 5 HO with NV 5600. Both of these trucks consistently got over 21 mpg with the 94 model hitting 25 and 26 mpg on long road trips with atv in bed. For some reason mileage increased with atv in bed. I gave up the 2001. 5 in divoece property settlement, then went to Toyota Prerunner for two years. Good truck (really a car with a small bed). The Toyota would get 18 mpg if you babied it.

I was then the proud owner of a 2006 QC long bed CTD with G56 6 speed. I was proud until I realized this is not the same truck as the last two. After several tanks, nearing 5,000 miles on the odometer it barely touched 19 mpg on the second tank and last weekend towing a 13' single axle trailer with 1 atv on trailer and one in bed of truck I took a 800 mile round trip. 14 mpg avg. The return trip was less than 14. I had the cruise set on 75 on the interstate which was about 70% of the trip and on the way up there the cruise was set at about 72 on the interstate. . My two previous CTD's both recorded over 17 mpg pulling this same load with me hammering on them.

This truck is using about 20 % more fuel. I guess all of the multiple injection events for the federal smog weenies is being wasted and going up in smoke. Maybe we should install a nozzle on the end of the tail pipe to harness the thrust from this wasted fuel.

I cannot understand how anyone can equate more fuel usage intentionally as being a good thing.

I also noticed the oil was very black at first change at 3,000 miles. My other two trucks oil was much cleaner at 7,500 miles.

I guess after rambling on, my point is that I would happily trade this truck for either of my two previous trucks if the 94 had 4 doors and the 2001. 5 had a better lift pump. I never had any problems with it but I know some did.

Wow, stock this truck produces almost 100 more horspower than your second gen ... That is approximalty 33 percent MORE power stock. and your beef with this truck is it gets about 20 percent lower fuel mileage??? Me thinks the 3rd gen is actually MORE fuel efficient...

two trucks of similar weight traveling the same speed should use roughly the same amount of power to maintain that speed... and the 3rd gen should be more aerodynamic.

if you add 100 more hp to a 12v, mileage generally goes UP...

sorry, but your logic is flawed

Of course I'm a Cummins guy but it has to be at least somewhat due to weight. A 3gen truck outweighs a similarly configured Dmax by almost a 1,000 pounds. That inline 6 grunt sure helps too. Funny video! :-laf

Alot of it is who has more low end power. If you can come out of the hole with a ton of low end your gonna have a huge advantage over the guy who has to rev up to 3grand to get power. Thats why six in a row make it go

The Tug of wars are certainly funny to watch and yes it is probably all about whos got the best traction I'm sure, but why is it the Duraslack and Powerchoke guys always wanna bring up some why this one couldn't do this or that, Gee , wasn't the Cummins just out pullin the D-slack, its just for fun isn't it? :-laf

just yesterday on the way back from va on a fairly nasty grade (i don't know the % but it takes a couple minutes to climb) a few miles south of ronoke va on I81 south bound i got held up behind a duraturd near the top, i was 15-16k gross and i had the cruise on 68 in od and he had a medium to good sized bumper pull camper, he had the flashers on poking along around 50 and i enjoyed dropping into 4th and pulling around him and leaving him in a cloud, he got by me while i was fueling up and i got to blow by him on another hill :-laf

Check out the Edmunds.com grade pull contest between the big three on a grade in the so. west near the boarder. IT claims the DURA/Alison 6spd out pulled faster and with better comfort (Edmunds must be owned by GM) than the other two, but if you look at the ambient temp (60*) they knew not to try it in hot weather. It also compared it with the 4spd auto CTD and it did not give rearend gears, as I started to point out these issues on TDP.com all they could do was call me names and have the moderators kick me off the site, and then invite me back in after 20 posts pilled up on me, without being able to defend myself. I have not been passed by yet towing up grades with 5ver in tow and had to slow down behind Furds and Duraflats while I'm waiting for traffic to clear on the left and blew by them when cleared, even in temps exceeding 110* and my temp stayed normal. P. S. I told TDP to stick it where the sun don't shine, and for those who don't believe me, my signature is RVTRKN as it is here

It really does not matter to me what the out come of these tests supposedly come out as. It is like the movie critics. One look under the hood of a Ford or Chevy would keep me from buying one. There must be an engine in there some place but if you want to work on it ,it will take a while to get to the bottom of all that junk. From what I have seen with the 06 Duramax the valve covers appear to be at least an hour away from sunlight. I will stick with my little 6. When the hood goes up all I see is engine.

You could go on about rods, longevity,I only bought a Cummins the 'Dodge" came with it ~ Blah Blah Blah.

A tug of war means nothing but who has traction. The Allison transmission 1st gear is low and comes out of the hole quick. With Resistance, and we all there is a enough power there to smoke the tires,Once that is done that equates to 'lost traction' anything can be reversed in it's own direction. The LBZ right out of the gate will spool the turbo and light the tires thru second gear stock.

A tug of war is child play, play on kids if you must. :D

I agree with you specially if you know up front ya can't win. :{

I was always under the impression that an inline six will pull a grade better than a similar V8 with gears/transmission being the same. That is why (among other reasons) that ALL your OTR trucks are I-6's.
