Hi fellas,

I inquired about title and registration on my 3500 SRW and was told all one tons require commercial tags. Is this true even for SRW trucks? I know many states are that way for duallies.

Thanks,

Tom

My SRW one tonners are registered as Farm Vehicles. Even without the farm plates, they typically register it under commercial status. Another thing, the DPS (Arizona Highway Patrol) will pull you over and ticket for a lack of mud flaps (Yes, even on a non-dually) if the truck is a 3500. I speak from experience.

Was that you that got popped a while back on I-17 between PHX and Flag?

No that wasnt me. I run up and down the Mexican driveway known as I-19. I have flaps on the trucks now so they leave me alone. The funny thing was that he got me for no mud flaps and could care less that I was towing a loaded 32 foot trailer (A 8000 lb trailer, 20 cows at 950lbs each and 10 calves). Anyway, now we do that with medium duties.

TFucili,

I've got a 3500 SRW registered in AZ and when I went to renew I asked if it was under a commercial vehicle and I was told "no". I paid for the 2 year plan and went out the door.

They made register my dually as commercal, and I found the hard way that you flaps, I run up and down I-19 also. .

Yeah, I've heard those 3500 SRW's throw a lot more mud than a 2500. What a pos law.

Wow I did not think mine was registered commercial but just went and looked. The license plate does not say commercial but on the registration paper it show GVW 8000# $8 and 9530# CRF is another $8 so I guess it is. I wonder how the DPS knows if the plate does not say anything? I ran around for kind of a long time without mud flaps and was never stopped. I do have mud flaps now though and yes it is a dually. I think I would have to argue, maybe a losing argument, in traffic court for not having mud flaps. I would think the dealer would be required to provide new 3500 trucks with them on if the state required them. I am sure it is a safety thing to have them and does makes sense but still puzzling.

Bob,

Maybe I am missing something, but I would think the GVW for a Dually should be more than 8,000:confused: and what is CRF ???

My guess is that there are a lot of folks that have no idea they are commercial on the reg paperwork. Prob dont even have the truck insured as commercial. Found the law on mudflaps. says nothing about dually or otherwise... .

28-958. 01. Rear fender splash guards

A. A person shall not operate a truck, trailer, semitrailer or bus on a highway unless the vehicle is equipped with rear fender splash guards that comply with the specifications provided in this section.

C. This section does not apply to:

1. A vehicle commonly known as a pickup truck with a manufacturer's rating of three-quarter ton or less, except that this section applies if the pickup truck has been modified from the original bumper height design to raise the center of gravity of the pickup truck.

The registration law just talks about 3/4 ton or less. Doesnt differentiate any one ton from another as to the need for commercial tags. They all need em apparently. I will confirm this however.

When I registered my truck (03 3500 quad cab) I was told about it having to be registered as commercial but when i took it to my insurance agent he told me nothing about having to insure it as a commercial truck. Should i? or does that not apply to me since I only use it as a personal vehicle?

Just out of the blue here, but if you have a SRW 3500, but don't like the way mudflaps look, could you just put some 2500 tags on the doors in place of the 3500? I'm in Missouri, so it doesnt pertain to me, but I am always looking at ways to stick it to the man:D Wouldn't help with a dually obviously, that, and it doesn't change your info according to your VIN, but just for the casual observer on the road, would it work?

I maybe missing something also!!! One line says on the registration 8000 # GVW and they charged $8. The next line under that said 9350 I assume also #'s GVW and also said CRF(commercial registration fee? I am only quessing) and charged another $8. I am thinking you total the 2 and the GVW is registered to 17,350#'s which is realy not enough as I recall the MFGR says GVW for this truck is 21,500 I THINK!!!???

With any thing the feds or state does is always CONFUSING!!

This is my best guess only. I dont it makes a hill of beans difference if you insure the truck commercially or not unless you haul goods for a living. They have time for B. S. registration rules while these "visitors" drive by our front porch untouched. I am sure this guy is registered commercial.

My Step-Father got cited for NO Mudflaps on his 2500 with gas engine(like it matters gas vs diesel) on I-40 outside of Flag. So Stupid, officer must have been having a bad day.

Is that an actual picture from your porch? If so, I may have to visit to sight in my rifles !!

OK, if it is a law in AZ that whatever trucks need mudflaps, shouldn't they come from DC or the dealer with mudflaps? They come with horns, turn signals, clearance lights, brake lights, etc. You can get cited for not having any of those things. Let's face it, the average Joe is going to assume that his $40,000 truck comes from the dealer with all the stuff needed to make it legal. I did. I put mudflaps on to keep rocks from chipping as much paint, not because it might be the law. #@$%!

Lights , horns windshields, and such are "mandated" by federal standards (DOT)... and much like most of the crap in the FMCSA bible, just because it's a federal law, individual states can make up there own laws as they see fit. Az. even has a "qiuck check" box on their tickets for the splash/ mud flap deal, along with a box for window tint and a bunch of other nonsense.
