Was wondering about the best route to take from Milwaukee Wi to Phoenix Ariz?Quickest,best places for fuel etc. . Plan on leaving Oct 12th and towing two atvs.

Milwaukee to Rockford IL to St. Louis to Oklahoma City to Flagstaff AZ to Phoenix would probably be your quickest. 1,884 miles. Plenty of truck stops along the way.

For a scenic trip - leave I-40 in AZ and take US191 at Sanders Az to Saint Johns AZ - US60 to Show Low then Globe AZ then Phoenix. 1,872 miles.

A note US191 to Saint Johns is a little rough you will have to slow down a bit. US60 Show Low to Phoenix takes you through the Salt River Canyon. A little steep going down and up but not long and sure worth the effort wonderful views. It is more scenic for sure. You will be passing right by my place about 5 miles West of Concho Valley and a couple miles of dirt road North of US60.

I will be going down to Destiny RV Resort for the month of November via US60 and Salt River Canyon towing my 35 foot 5er. I gross combined a little over 21000 #'s so if I can do it so can you. I have went this way A LOT OF TIMES and every time see something different and never disappointed.

As far as the fueling is concerned, I would use truck stops and you can get frequent user cards to help in some of the costs. I am a member of Flying J and when travelling I get the "cash price" when I use my Visa with my frequent fueler card at a Flying J. You can get their locations or any other brand X locations on the internet, to help figure your fueling stops.

No Nascar for us,planning on a few atv trips around Crown King. Maybe try the senator Hwy with wheelers?Were staying in Sun City with Grand Parents,just me and my dad for this trip.

Never done the senator highway but hear it is awesome. I had heard there was a narrow guage railroad from the Crown King Area to Prescott. It supposed to be awesome for wheeling so you might check on it as well. Somebody I talked to years ago said there was a tunnel you can go through and see little veins of gold. He also said his girlfriend said she never go wheeling with him again after the trip. I often wonder if he gave up girlfriend or wheeling I am guessing girlfriend.

I spent a bunch of time on the Senator when I lived in Prescott (1991-1995). Lots of history to explore. Grab an Arizona Gazatteer, check out www.ghosttowns.com to find some sites to look for, and have a blast! There are open mine shafts and townsites everywhere in that area. The train tunnel (I think this is it) is a bit off of the Senator Highway and is pretty cool to see (I don't remember any gold veins, but the ceiling is soot stained from the old trains). The main road is pretty easy (it's an old stagecoach road) as are the old rail grades that crisscross the area. You'll find plenty of challenging side roads though. And you couldn't have picked a better time of year.



When I was there last year I found that the north end is getting pretty populated (lotsa big $ cabins and private property), but hopefully the south part (rougher terrain) isn't bad yet.

Last time I was at Crown King one of the 2 bars burnt down. The remaining bar was collecting money to help rebuild the other one. i heard the other bar was rebuilt now. Not many places like it left in the USA. Awesome place!!!!

Got back from trip,great time except it rained on the trip back. From mid New mexico to Milwaukee. Also lost a trailer tire as in tire and rim on I-80 west of Worlds largest truckstop,lugs sheared off and had to find a shop out of Davenport called MidWest Tire. Took some time and frustration as well as getting soaked but those guys there were great with help. Could have been alot worse glad noone got hurt. Not fun swapping a hub in the e-lane on I-80,had 2 cops drive on by as we worked,never stopped!!

One "nice" thing about AZ if you can keep your eyes open. Heavy trucks pay 8 cents more for diesel than light duty trucks. that is why you see the big rig fueling stations "out back" separate from the RV'er public. If you use the big rig pumps look for a different nozzle with a lower price posted and use that one or mention to the cashier that you are light duty and they will refund the . 08/gal. Sometimes there is a sticker on the pump that tells you to go ask for the "light-duty-discount" (Chevron on 16th st in Yuma). If you do a full tank you save enough for a coffee and donut.

When you get to the Flagstaff area, get off at Country Club Drive, turn right and drive through town on Rt66. Worth the ride through old Flagstaff for the old style atmosphere. If you are there in time for a steak dinner, either turn North up hwy 89 3-4 miles to the Cattlemans Restaraunt. Good food and when you pull in there are local high school/College girls on horseback to guide you to a parking spot. The inside is filled with hunting trophies from birds to bears, probably 150+. If you cross over to the east side of I-40 at Butler st ( a couple miles south of Country Club) and turn into Black Barts Steak House, the waiters and waitresses are all college students from NAU from the performing arts dept and they entertain while they serve. Very different.
