Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) ARP head studs

What is the precedure for installing the bigger 14mm head studs. How difficult is it, what special things that you have to do. thanks.

I am pretty sure you have to drill and tap the block, which calls for yanking out the engine.

Yes, engine has to be pulled. You have to drill and tap to 14mm threads to all current bolt holes as stated above. This obviously cannot be done with the engine in the truck or even assembled for that matter..... unless metal shavings in your engine doesn't bother you.

Engine has to be out. Block drilled and tapped. Cylinder head and rocker towers reamed. I was told the block does not have to be disassembled.



I suggest pulling your cylinder head on your puller. Cover the block real good, tow the truck to Scheid in Effingham, have them fire ring your block. Tow it back home, reassemble with new fire rings and headgasket, 12mm studs. This is what I did here in TH. You'll save quite a bit by doing the head R and R yourself. Or drive it there, pull the head in their parking lot.

Another option to the 14mm studs are ARP Custom Age 625+ studs in 12mm. They offer the same clamp load but in a 12mm stud.

So for the 12mm studs the motor does not have to come out? How much would i save by taking off the head myself, also how much would all of that cost me, i am shooting for 700 hp. ?

No the motor stays in chassis to install 12mm studs.



I can't remember how much I saved. Call them and ask them, they will tell you. IIRC, I think the headgasket with rings was about 200, machine block for rings was about 250. Then studs are about 400.



Doing the head r&r yourself you'll learn alot about your truck. BTW doing all this doesn't add any HP.

That is the down side to doing all of this, but with out it would you be taking steps backwards.
