It's Alive

Joe,I paid $1,250. 00 for the 5831C Aux Trans + shipping. Apparently they sell a lot of these things to guys like me. Here's the link to Goody's I dealt with Jeff Solove. Very helpful and stupid question friendly.

If you look at the cost of a US Gear or a Gear Vendor overdrive unit you'll see that this thing is about half. Course if you pay someone to install it you'll be about the same money. But, The brownie box is a three speed. One under drive gear(2:1), 1 to 1 gear, and one overdrive gear(1:. 73).

Here the 5831 AuxTrans page

Oh, by the way, Ya'll... ... The rear end is in the shop at Fort Worth Gear and Axle for a set of 3:54 gears and limited slip. The carrier has to go anyway cause of the new ratio, so I thought, why not. Should have it back in three to four days. Ready to go. I drove the bus around the block this last week and it definitely was geared too low. Fourth gear was about 40 mph. Since I'll be effectively doubling my gear ratio it should do 80mph no sweat.

I am tired. Ever pull a Dana 70 out of a Motorhome tandem set up by your self before? Way too much muscle power for me. I think before I'm through I'll put a big compressor, tank and 1" impact wrench in the old girl. Don't want to have to cheater bar those wheels off ever again.

It's update time. It's been a long time since I last posted. So here goes.

The rear end is re-geared to 3:54 POSI and back in the bus. Hooked up and oiled. Ready to go. The Spicer is still hanging in the shop. It will need a pair of cross members and front and rear flanges to hang it behind the Allison 542. Oh, and the drive shaft which I had rebuilt ,will have to be shortened. I've fabricated one of the crossmembers and have it ready to weld up. The other one will need a little more work. Shifter linkage will be worried about later. Really not a big deal.

I was going to try and drive the MH home this weekend but upon checking the lights I noticed some of the clearance lights wern't working. They were before. So I turned on the headlights and they won't work. Where they were working fine before, about three weeks ago. So, somewhere between then and now, I have induced a short in the lighting circuit. This is geting old fast... .

I found a great deal on a MD3060 Allison 6 speed for the bus. .

I know, I've allready got that part taken care of, but this is a 6 speed. So, here I sit beating myself up. Do I stick with the AT 542 with the Spicer 5931 - 3 speed auxilary transmission? Or,swap it all out and put in then MD 3060. Which by the way is a #2 bell housing.

Does anybody know if an 8. 3 L Cummins #2 bell adapter have the same engine side bolt pattern as the 5. 9L #3 bell adapter? I'll explain my reason for asking later.

Anyway,,,,,,It's coming together but with the time change it's really, really going slow.

I'll post some more pictures on my photo albumn site tonight.

Curtis,

You should be able to run a shorter stroke linear actuator by setting the push/pull point closer to the shaft. The trick is that it will require more force to do so.

Now THAT would take some interesting and imaginative shift linkage in a pusher... LOL:eek:

I have seen it done on a rig up truck before but the truck would vibrate the hood off of the old truck. Problem was drive shaft or shafts speed was way to high. I was told a long time ago that the deeper gear sets were weaker that the higher gears, some thing to do with pinion gear size? I am not a drive train engineer, just have had a few learning experiences. Jim
