For those hauling horses

P. S. IMHO--Rock River stuff only fits reliably with Rock River stuff; interchangeability is a crap shoot with other manuf. equip. ; Colt bolt assy. 's are high maintenance; DPMS & Remington are just, well, inexpensive pieces of equip. with undesirable tolerances.

:-laf Well, obviously you guys shoot more than the average Joe. I've built quite a few, myself, but the Lewis Machine are some of the best I've ever seen. Most people buy a DPMS or Bushmaster and go plink on the weekends during hunting season. Most of those rifles see MAYBE 1,000 rds, tops in a lifetime. For the average guy, they do well. Most of the horror stories out there result from those average guys(maybe below average), poor to no maintanance, and sloppy tolerances. Then they'll buy a new $$$ upper, pin it on, and wonder why it won't shoot with daylight flashing between the rails!!

The Barnes look promising. We need more top notch makers..... Is Barnes casting and machining their own parts? Or are they contracted out for blanks and machine to their own tolerances? Where are they located? 919 area code on the phone number, isn't that South Commiefornia?

Les Baer makes 'em too. Those babies are TIGHT!! Les Baer Custom Inc. Can't say as they are cheap, though. :{

Believe it or not, I've actually had great success with Armalite lowers, albiet they were of the AR-10 variant. Krieger offers a great barrel blank for those rifles, and I've got one in . 243 that'll do well at Camp Perry, if someone else would shoot it!!

I've built a number of lowers using Rock River Arms parts kit and the quality seems to be consistent. I did have one kit which had a marginally oversized trigger or hammer pin, so I tossed it. As for their roll pins I've never had an issue on any lower receiver. The trigger and hammer springs seem to be of decent quality. I've used RRA kits on the following lowers with no issues other than the one oversized pin:

Rock River

Aero Precision (Boeing)

Smith & Wesson

Spikes Tactical

If I was to go any other route when building I'd buy lower parts from Brownells.

As for "Colt" bolts being high maintainance I don't see that issue. I've taught hundreds of classes to LE officers where the sole name brand rifle in every class was "Colt". Yes, I've seen bolt issues on a few occasions where for unknown reasons the gas rings seemed to be dragging inside the carrier. I summed it up to possibly oversized contract rings on a "Colt" bolt. I am aware of the high speed, low friction, high dollar bolts out there. Honestly, I see no issue with "Colt" bolts and neither does the military as they have issued "Colt" nearly a billion dollars in contracts over the last ten years.

Not trying to start a AR war here. This could turn into another best transmission or oil thread. :-laf

WalterJ Said, "You must evaluate the top grade AR platform from Barnes Precision".

OK, I looked and they have the "CDI" swat look. I'm sure they are of high quality. Not everyone needs that style and I would never recommend buying or building a rifle around a quad rail forend. Not that they're bad, but they're certainly not for everyone. I have a few in both configurations. Most plinkers prefer the round plastic handguards.

"CDI" = Chicks Dig It

jray, thanks for the compliment.

I like guns. :D

LMT is good stuff too, and I'm a dealer for them also. I do NOT have an FFL... . I can get you everything but the lower. LMT's dealer price allows some "leeway" so I can sell at a good discount. RRA sells to dealers on a thin profit margin. Cant really discount much if any on RRA. There is a "sale" on bolt carrier groups, and a few other things. Trigger kits, stock assy's etc.

From what I gather, LMT has a rep for superior barrels. This is hard to do because when theyre chrome lined, the process cant be controlled to evenly distribute the CL throughout the bore/chamber.

The conventional way is to chemically remove some bore material, so the CL will build up the difference. A simple but far from exact procedure.

I'm told LMT has Mike Rock make his barrels oversized so that at least the chrome starts on a more precise foundation material. Sounds plausible.

BTW My brother has 2 RRA uppers and hasnt had any fitment issues with several different lowers. He also has 2 LMT uppers and says theyre frickin lazers. :D He's a "high master" class shooter and is distinguished in hi power. Shot on the "all guard" team with Derrick Martin. Much better than me. :-laf

Almost forgot.

Knights is generally top shelf, but their triggers are said to be a high maintenance item in the SOF/tactical fields.

Theyre picking up the Geiselle and are so far real satisfied with them.

You must evaluate the top grade AR platform from Barnes Precision @

USA made AR 15 parts- american made AR 15 parts and accessories manufactured by Barnes Precision Machine

Their superb components make for a remarkable value. . 223 or 5. 56 available. . 308 coming soon. They using Montana Rifle Co. , SS barrels, MagPul, etc. in the $1200 range depending on barrel length. Too many improvements to mention here, so call them.

AR15 Barrels and Parts

Rock creek bbls, MPI bolts. Looks like good stuff.

I've never heard of them, but that dont mean theyre not up to speed. :D

SI, or AKA Sonju is also said to be good stuff. Out of Montana.

Those don't look like hunting rifles. What do you plan to do with those things? oh my gosh I'm calling my representative

Those don't look like hunting rifles.

The top one is my varmint set up,

the set of 3 are for longer range varmint hunting, or elk, mule deer, etc

the third one is for what ever,

the 1911 is because we can.

I am in New Mexico and it is legal to hunt with these type of rifles and we can use a suppressor. :D:D

I would set one up and ship it to a dealer near you but I don't think these are allowed in the peoples republic of Kalifornia.
