Mark Kendrick, many times the artic airs and your twins have been discussed on this forum. Everytime you want to discuss the problem with not having an external wastegate. I have a great idea on April 1st,the ODRA is hosting a dyno day at Performance Diesel in Emory,Texas. I believe that is pretty close to your neck of the woods. I think this would be a good opportunity to dyno artic airs against your set up. I will be there along with a few other artic air trucks ,so show up and lets see who makes power, otherwise I dont care to have you comment on the power making capabilities of the artic airs. You always shoot them down over the wastegate, yet you claim to know nothing about them,so show up at the dyno and lets figure this out. I am sure you make a great product, why dont you tell the good points of your product and dont try tearing down someone elses.

Will a twins setup require studs? I think I saw that they cost around $500 clams. I wasnt figuring on that. Is ARP the only manufacture or is there a better solution?

No, they are not required for twins only. Now if you are shooting nitrous, I would definitely consider them. I personally put over 20,000 miles over the course of 7 months with no studs. Piers has also done the same. The truck he is currently testing at almost 700 on #2 has stock head bolts.

The SHOWDOWN:

RELENTLESS ARCTIC AIRS vs KENDRICK TWINS

APRIL 1, 2006

Battle Site: EMORY, TEXAS

WILL YOU BE THERE

:-laf :-laf :-laf :-laf :D Oo. :-{} :-{}

Wish I didnt live in PA, I would come love to see the Arctic Airs in action. I know I heard tons of good with them. I am sold on them. Fill us in with results and info after the fun pack day.

P. S. I know its a month away

When a potential customer asks about the merits of two designs I feel compelled to answer their question.

The Arctic twins look well built and priced. I could easily match the price if I left off the external gate and the fabrication that goes with it. I choose not to. The only set I've built using internal gates was a s300/b2 set ...

some without an external gate... not my favorite http://www.kendrickdiesel.com/Joes_twins/

I build them with external gates because I have never seen a set using internal gates that could control boost at power levels that tax the primary charger. If you want to build a 600+hp truck that crams the exhaust through a 9cm housing and a wastegate the size of a nickel the go ahead. I don't think it's prudent.

As far as a showdown... I don't own a 3rd gen, but my dually should be up and running by then :D

Showdown remark was just a joke for the record. I am a clown. I love this website and hearing both sides of the story. Keep up the good work Relentless and Kendrick

I am not sure about the ford, but the guy who owns the place has one of the nastiest duramaxs that ive ever seen. Last summer at the Dallas event he dynoed something like 738 hp. I am not real sure where this new place is ,I live down near Houston.

The stock turbo is really not that small of a turbo compressor wise and can make really good power in a set of twins. The exhaust side is just too small with that 9cm housing. If you can make it run efficiently things would be fine. That is why using an external wastegate is key when using a top turbo with an exhaust housing that small. The drive pressures just kill you, robbing you of power.

To put it in perspective, as Mark was saying, using the exact same turbos but with an external wastegate, boost and drive pressure are equal up to 65 lbs of boost. That is very efficient and you really can’t ask for anything better than that. On the Relentless twins, drive pressure is 67 lbs at only 50 lbs of boost. That is very inefficient. At that rate, by the time you get to 60 lbs of boost, drive pressures are going to be over 80 lbs. It will make good power still, but you could make a whole lot more if the drive pressures were not there.

If you are going to use the stock turbo on top without an external wastegate, definitely install a set of head studs. If you don't, boost pressures may be within your comfort zone according to the boost gauge, but drive pressures will be way higher than the head gasket can handle and you will never know it until the gasket pops.

There are quite a few ~800 hp duramaxes lurking about these days. It's almost enough to make you buy a chevy... nah ;):D.

WOW  An 800hp Izuzu, defintely have to stick with the cummins, some 5. 9L blocks know what 1100hp plus is like mostly 12 and 24 valves dont know of any HPCR up there yet but the future will tell, these new cp3 make the sky and your wallet the limit

The sad part is Ive seen a dmax do that on a stock charger. He was shooting lots of nitrous and water/meth. I know the motor will not live like that but it is depressing to see a stock single charger out dyno a highly modded cummins.

They are pretty durable. The only failures I've heard of heard of have been the rods.

It's a lot easier on the motor to use better chargers though.

And a few block/bottom end failures! Its nothing big just the crank falling out on the ground basically.

So what would you rather have? A 700HP D-max that is more or less a 1/4 mile/dyno queen, (at that HP level due to the NO2) that cant tow a trailer at probably more than 400 HP without EGT probs. Or a 600 HP daily driveable day to day HP on diesel only that can tow trailers at that HP and not have to worry about EGT's or power without spending time and money getting NO2?

Ive seen my fair share of D-max's and they run well, but everyone of them are NO2 dependant past 500-550 HP. I havent seen what they are doing with the twins yet but I think I can figure it out, but daily at that HP they are having some issues with the strength of some of the internal parts.

your right the cp3 mods are on there way to making the hpcr trucks push over that power!! :-laf

Thanks for the responses everybody. I still have a few questions though. Is it possible to replace my stock 35(?) with a good turbo and then upgrade it to a set of twins or is kind of a package deal only? I talked to Piers a few days ago and they told me their wasnt much that I could do as far as modding the stocker in an 04. 5. I do understand that I can make a set of twins using my original turbo and another one but is it gonna be the real looser in my plans to make high HP? I have been told that you can find some good deals on ebay for singles from time to time but I am worried that I would just end up with a mild/moderate turbo that I would be unhappy with down the road and end up forkin over the cash at the end anyway. I guess im sayin id like to start cheap if possible but I will be doin it either way.
