I wonder if I can use my Old Smokey mount and BHAF with that ASA cold air intake set up. I assume the benefit is better flow through their smooth piping over stock

I like the mandrel bent pipe too. I don't know if the gains would be noticeable or not. I have been looking into making my own intake tube, just for fun. The parts are easy to find at truck shops.

Iam also wondering about the intake noise increase as there must be a certain ammount of muffling with that rubber, waffled, stock intake tube... . might be nice!

The muffling of the turbocharger whine comes mostly from the airbox. A BHAF makes it sing more, and a gauze type filter (aFe, K&N, etc. ) will let out even more whistle. Given the size of the intake hose, it is hardly a limiting factor to airflow. That mandrel bent pipe just looks nice :D

Hi Fellas,

I'll try to answer some of your questions. First off, my apologies for posting the thread on the forum - it should have gone on the classifieds, where it is being moved to. Thanks BushWakr for the advice and tips.

We tried to use the stock filter with the new intake but they wouldn't mate up - so we couldn't test just the tube, and I wasn't brave enough to test it without a filter.

The turbo whine difference between the stock airbox and the kit was, well, there wasn't any before. It sounds like music now - probably the same as the BAHF filter w/o the airbox. We've messed a lot on V-8 big blocks and small blocks with rippled stock inlets and new aftermarket ones, and there was a difference on the dyno, though not really noticable without the numbers. I got the idea from the aftermarket kits out there for the majority of the imports.

The first thing I noticed was I gained just over 1 mpg on a pure long-distance trip to LA and back - about a 7 hour round trip. Around town it wasn't as much, probably about . 5 mpg if that. It seems the kit is good for efficiency most, and it dyno'd 2 hp to the rear wheels in od w/ 3. 54's. My engine has 214k miles on it and is stock otherwise, so the gains may be more on a decent mill. Love to get one out to the folks running big hp and tq numbers to see.

One TDR member has inquired about using the BHAF filter and our Intakes - by the numbers it should mate up, but without having one I'm not positive these are long enough. I'm going to put the stocker back in this weekend and see how close it comes, and I'll post a reply back on that.

Happy to help fellas - That old stock stuff just looked really bad - I like the looks more than anything else

Later on -

- Sam

That's one of the things I can't understand about the 2nd Gen. thucks. With an intake hose that makes a 120 degree plus turn why not straighten it out? My familiarity with airport hydrant refueling systems tells me this is wrong. Straighten out the bends and let the air flow. If it were me I would switch the Passanger side battery with the air box. I feel they would breath a whole lot better.

Since I opened up mine with Old Smokeys BHAF mount and used a K&N in it I can feel the difference. Just my 2 hundred dollars (. 02 adjusted for inflation) worth. :D :D
