I'm trying to find out the terminology (can't remember to save my life) for when you take off from idle in second gear, and you don't give it quite enough throttle - the engine will ramp up a little so you don't kill the engine.

What is that called? And any ideas why mine isn't doing that anymore? it used to work.

I don't know what term you're looking for but the manual transmission trucks from the 24v on have a "governor" in the ecm that fuels the engine automatically if the engine speed drops below app. 850 RPMs. If you're not used to it, it can seem like the truck is running away.

I am not sure there is a term for it. Its the ability of the ECM and injection pump to modify the fuel without a throttle input.

I would call it throttling as the ecm is increasing fuel to maintain minimum engine RPM, almost every computer controlled diesel will do it.

It shouldn't be speeding up, but rather holding rpms. It may accelerate a little as the ECM stabilizes the fuel required but it should stabilize to idle rpms. Idle rpms for a moving vehicle are often higher than a stationary one thou.

If you are having issues I would look at your injection pump.

Why don't you fill out a signature so we know what kind of truck you have. If you have a truck with both a crank sensor AND a cam sensor then maybe one of them is going bad. The speed input would be very important to the speed regulation. Do you have any codes?

thNks for all the help.
I'vve got some info you guys might want to keep in your memory banks

On a whim I disconnected both batteries and left them that way for 2-3 days.
In he process, put some new cables on and new batteries.

Fired it back up, and I'll be darned it starts in 2nd gear like it is supposed to. Apparently the ECM got reset with batteries out.

I guess I rebooted my truck.

I wish I could get my G56 to do that. :{

Mine's always taken off without throttle input in 2nd.
As mentioned though,I had to get used to the ECM maintaining a certain rpm. I was bogging it in 2nd in a parking lot when new and it ramped up a bit on it's own.

Well my first G56 test drive was in a 07 MY C&C in 06, and it stalled leaving the parking lot, letting the clutch out slowly in second gear like I've done many times with my NV5600. I was embarrassed, but I paid closer attention to the second gear starts. Later in 07, with my new 07 C&C in my signature, I noticed the same feel and stalled my truck more than once and just attributed it to the different setup. I allways give a little throttle while launching in second, first gear is not an issue. With the first one I drove, and my current G56, it seems to be normal, I don't know what to say about it, but it is what it is.
