AT drain plug

Has anyone out there installed a drain plug on a automatic transmission? I would like to put one in. Less mess when I change fluid. Also I have heard of people putting motor oil in AT's. Is there any advantage to this? Is it safe?

B&M makes a drain plug kit. They are not hard to put in. Might just look at a B&M, Maghytec or whoever elses pan. A lot of aftermarket pans come with a drain plug. Although the entire pan is definitely more expensive than just the plug kit. Can't speak to the motor oil in the auto trans though. I personally would have to pass on that but I have run engine oil in the old 60's and early 70's era manuals before with no problems.

I installed the B&M drain plug in mine after the first messy fluid change. You can get one from Summit for $6. 50.

i have the b&m drain plug kit. where do you drill the hole on the stock 96 pan? thanks.

If you want cheap and functional, drill a 1/2 inch hole in the trans pan. Place a 3/8 nut over the hole on the outside and weld or braze it to the pan. (For this application, I prefer braze. ) Run the thread with a tap to make sure it is clean. Cut down a bolt so it is about the same length as the thickness of the nut. Use silicone or tefflon tape to seal the "plug" to the nut.



You can put the plug about anywhere as long as nothing protrudes into the pan that could be a problem. Personally, I usually put it toward the rear of the pan on the driver's side.
