Okay, this is nuts. I bought four quarts of ATF+3 to refill my transfer case after putting it back in the truck following my overdrive unit installation. The guy at the shop said it took 3. 5 quarts. I also found a fifth quart leftover from a few months ago when I changed the trans fluid on my '96.

Five quarts later, the thing still wasn't full, so I pulled out the owner's manual to see if it listed a capacity for the case. Didn't find a listing for it, BUT, it did say to use ATF+4. WTF? I've never seen an ATF+4. Just the +3. Is there a difference? Do I get to drain the thing, waste 5 quarts of otherwise pefectly good fluid only to have to go buy 6-7 quarts of ATF+4?

<sigh>

Maybe I'll just put Redline in it... IF I can find an equivelent.

My book that came with the truck indicates that the transfer case can use plain old ATF or ATF+3, capacity is 6. 5 pints. I'm sure the would like you to buy more expensive ATF+3.

If it says C4+ you can use C4 and add friction modifyer. It is available here at the local Auto transmission parts distibuters or you might get it at a good transmission shop. They use it with regular cheap dexron/ mercon 3 or C4 to bring it up to the + spec. Its like adding posi additive to your differential. I believe the C4 is a heavier viscosity oil than the atf 3.
Hope this helps

RobG,
If your transfer case is a NV 241 HD, it will take 4 Qts to get it filled. If it is a NP 241 HD, it will only take 3. 5 Qts. You can use either the +3 or the +$ fluid. It realy makes no difference in the transfer case.
