1999 update

I have a 2001,2500 with the 5speed ,nv4500 .I was looking to change the oil in it and was looking for the Castrol syntorq lt I was told at the dealership that the quite making it 3 years ago and the service bulletin says I can use ATF+4 in it now ??? Any thoughts???
 
I wasn't sure the service guy at the dealership said ATF+4 but I was a little Leary about that but I will look at the amsoil thank you for the feedback
 
Redline MTL, but I'm sure a quality synthetic (or non) ATF (like ATF +4) will do just fine.

Do we know anything about what viscosity we are targeting here?

The dealership that told you that is an idiot. The Syntorq was last available under GM part number 19369226, but I think it's been discontinued. I would use the Amsoil John linked to above.

If you just don't want to use the Amsoil for some reason, just make sure whatever you use is GL-4, not GL-5. There are chemicals in the GL-5 that eat up the synchronizers.

You'll need four quarts.

Viscosity isn't the important factor here. If it was, just run 30W ND motor oil....

Run what you want. You asked what to run and the question was answered.

While dealerships are notorious for bad info, this one is a Dodge/Ram issue. There is indeed a bulletin stating that ATF +4 is the new fluid for the NV4500 and NV5600.

I don't agree with it at all, just pointing it out.

75/90 appears to be about a 30w.

Your "about" is much broader than mine. A straight 85W gear lube is much closer to a 30W crankcase lube.

A 75w-90 is more like a 15w-50

A 30wt has a viscosity range of 9.5-12.3 at 100°C.

A 75w gear lube has a min viscosity of 4.4 at 100°C, but no max viscosity.
A 90w gear lube has a min viscosity of 13.13 at 100°C, but no max viscosity.

I'm confused and probably showing my lube oil ignorance The 2001 NV4500 I have calls for 75W-90 gear oil, so I'm using RP 75W-90. ATF+4 seems awful thin for a transmission. My transfer case calls for ATF+4, so that's what I put in it. School me.
